INSPIRATION AND ADVICE

HERE'S WHAT TO WEAR WITH A SUIT TO EVERY TYPE OF WEDDING

The search is over. You’ve acquired the right suit and bought the shirt to go with it. You’ve put them both on and now you’re looking in the mirror thinking, “Is this… missing something?” Unless you’re off to a barefoot beach wedding, we can confidently say that your look will need a few special additions. Wondering what to wear with a suit? Think of your two- or three-piece as a solid foundation: now’s the time to build on it. And you can build whatever you like, from an eye-catching Academy Awards-inspired ‘fit to a slick spymaster ensemble. All you need are the right men’s suit accessories.

#1: SHOES AND SOCKS: YOUR SUIT STARTER

If you actually are off to a barefoot beach wedding you can skip this bit, but we recommend you don’t. After all, the most important part of the outfit, besides the suit itself, is the shoes. You will probably need a formal pair – think lace-up derbys or slip-on loafers. Buckled monk strap shoes are also an underrated choice. Generally, loafers pair well with wide-cut or tapered trousers, while lace-ups and monk straps are better suited to slimmer shapes. Choose thinner socks than usual (no sports socks!) and don’t stress too much about matching it to the rest of your outfit, especially if your trouser break covers the top of your shoes. Bright or jazzy socks can make an outfit stand out for all the right reasons.

#2: NECKWEAR: EVERY STYLE YOU'LL NEED

For the vast majority of events, you’ll need some sort of neckwear. To tie or to bow tie? That’s the first question. If the dress code is Black Tie, go for a bow tie (in black, naturally), and for any other event, the choice is yours. Neckwear is a counterpoint to the suit. Patterned ties go with block-colour suits and vice versa, so pattern-clash only if you’re feeling brave. The right colour choice should make your suit feel like a symphony, so go for harmonious shades in the same family – think a warm, autumnal green with earthy beige or brown. The easiest, quickest way to look put-together is to match said tie to a pocket square.

#3: JEWELLERY: CUFFLINKS, TIE BARS AND BROOCHES

Now you’ve got the essentials sorted, your suit will need the right finishing touch. It’s time for hardware. This means cufflinks, jewellery, tie-bars and lapel pins. Cufflinks are a must if your shirt needs them, so build the rest of your repertoire around your pick. Silver-tone cufflinks? Everything else should be silver-tone too. Jewellery lovers will find there isn’t a lot of real estate in a suit, as necklaces are replaced with ties and bracelets are hidden under shirt cuffs. The best way to make an impact is with a well-chosen ring, tie bar or lapel pin. Pick one or two suit accessories. Less embellishment = more impact.

#4: SUNGLASSES: THE ULTIMATE COOL-GUY ACCESSORY

Forgotten something? If you’re at an outdoor event, sunglasses are the final final touch. As far as accessories go, sunglasses are an all-rounder. They cover tired and bleary eyes from the night before, protect you from the sun and, if you’re lucky, give you a smidge of mystique. It is possible to go wrong with sunglasses and suits, though. Just make sure they match the vibe. Retro sunglasses with amber lenses look best with an oversized 70s-inspired suit, while a slim, black single-breasted number will suit your Neo from The Matrix rimless specs more.
