I JUST WANT TO DRESS LIKE A CHALET GIRL

I haven’t seen snow in a good while. Besides a light dusting that my saltshaker could put to shame, London isn’t often blessed with white blankets of the cold stuff. But that won’t stop me from waxing rhapsodic about it. Not the snow itself, per say – but all that it promises. Fluffy hats, matching mittens, chic coats and the only time a legging looks positively highbrow. If you were to ask me where I saw myself post-lottery win, it’d be the mountains. An opulent (but tastefully mid-century furnished) chalet to be specific. I’d swan around the place in feather-lined satin pyjamas avec sheet-mask, and before you could say ‘vin chaud!’ I’d have whipped the rollers out, donned the ski boots, and headed for the slopes before an afternoon of skiing and sipping.

My chalet-girl credentials may be a farfetched fantasy (for now), but I can still live out my dreams with the help of a good wardrobe. Taking inspo from the ultimate slope-style icons, including Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner, this is your go-to guide to nailing après-ski chic. And whether you’re planning a high-altitude getaway or not, these looks work just as well on the ski run as they do the school run. From street to slopes, keep scrolling for the chalet-girl essentials I’ll be bagging this winter.

THE BASE LAYER

Whoever coined the phrase, ‘It’s what’s on the inside that counts,’ must’ve been a seasoned alpine dresser. This is one of a few occasions where your most understated garments – from leggings to thermals – become fashion statements, and you’ll soon see I plan to drown these simple pieces in a variety of ostentatious garb. So it’s their simplicity that works to your advantage. Skin-hugging base layers create a flattering canvas for your dream chalet-girl ensembles, provide a clean slate on which you can rotate almost anything, and (most importantly) they keep you warm. It’s vital, then, that you invest in good quality options – and these fit the bill.

THE FAUX-FUR COAT

After making a memorable entrance at the end of summer, faux fur has remained the life of the autumn/winter party. Arriving in a cocktail of shades, lengths and finishes, this statement fabric is ideal for living out your après-ski fantasies. And if you’re going big, you may as well go really big. That’s why I’ll be purchasing a faux-fur coat this season. I mean, nothing says ‘snow queen’ like the swish of a fluffy jacket as you trot about your wood-lined terrace. These outerwear favourites are also incredibly cosy, meaning you have free rein to roll out the skimpiest of outfits well into December and beyond.

THE STATEMENT ACCESSORIES

When I think of chalet girls, the first thing that springs to mind is a fluffy hat. I’m not sure where that image sprang from, but it’s left an impression. Besides my snow bunny headpiece, I’ll also be reaching for accessories that strike a balance between practical and powerful – think fuzzy mittens, sharp sunglasses and faux-fur trims. I may not be in the right tax bracket for a sprawling alpine abode, but I’d have you fooled dressed in these.

THE BOOTS

On the point of practicality, footwear is worth a bit of forethought when it comes to the snow. Whether you’re hitting the slopes or strolling through the city, boots are your friend in colder climates. Go for something with a sturdy sole and plenty of grip (there’s nothing glamorous about taking a dive mid-stroll), and for optimal chalet girl style points, Moonboots provide a welcome hit of nostalgia.

THE BEAUTY ROUTINE

If I’m dressing the part, you’d best believe I’ll be extending my chalet-girl transformation to the beauty department. When you’re braving cold weather – particularly snow at high altitudes – your skin is going to suffer. Nourishing with rich lotions and potions is key to maintaining an enviable glow when you head for the mountains. Keeping your lips hydrated is another top tip for preventing a dry, dull complexion, and in this vein, nothing beats the Laneige Lip Sleeping mask. The fact that they’ve dropped a new hot cocoa scent is even better.
