ASOS MEETS: THE STARS OF CHEVALIER

It was hard not to giggle 'n' kick our feet when we found out we were gonna chat with Kelvin Harrison Jr. and Lucy Boynton, the oh-so-talented ⭐️s of the incredible new movie Chevalier. Set in 18th century France, the movie tells the story of Joseph Bologne, one of the first Black composers, who's life and work was erased from history... until now! Not only is the story a super important (and entertaining) one, the flick is a serious FEAST for the ears and eyes too – Lucy plays Marie Antoinette and the looks are WHEW. Stay tuned to get the behind-the-scenes goss, learn how to give Twiggy-grunge (like Lucy), and get the ☕️ on the amazing costumes.

We’re SO excited to meet you both! Let’s get into it. What made this story stand out to you both?

Kelvin: It’s so unique. You’d think that it was fictional, like Bridgerton, and then you find out it's a real dude and he's the son of a slave and a slave owner who becomes a Chevalier [ed note: a powerful person in court] next to Marie Antoinette. It's just an epic tale with an incredible Black main character.

SUCH an epic story ✨ Both your characters are based on real people. Does that make it harder or simpler to play them?
Lucy: The prep period is simpler. With Marie Antoinette there are so many references to pull from, so you know where to begin. It can be fun, but it can get intense because there are a lot of rules that you can't really bend outside of.

V true! This film looks at the importance and pressure of having influence. Was this interesting to you both?
K: I don't really know if Joseph thinks he has that much influence. He's trying to figure out how to use what he’s got to get him further ahead, and to feel like he has a sense of community. He just wants to play music and write, and if he has to finesse the system to do that, then so be it.

Understandable. Do you have a favourite line or moment in the film?

K: My favourite one to say was 'You are disgusting!' [Laughs]. I say that one to Minnie [Driver].

You played drunk excellently in that scene.

K: Stephen [Williams, the director] kept telling me to go drunker! And I was like, what do you want me to do? You want me to fall over? And oh my god, I was saying horrible things to you, Lucy!

OK, a potentially hard question here. Out of the two of you, who has the best style?
[Both point to each other.]
K: YOU! Hand’s down. Are you kidding me? Since the beginning of time, you’ve always been great.
L: Are you kidding me? The glasses and shirt you’ve got on now [see below]. Come on! And you’re so effortless, too.
K: Oh my gosh, with this look I was thinking I wanted to go edgy like Lucy. Because you always give a little Twiggy-grunge.

Lucy, we’re always obsessed with your eye makeup, it’s so expressive. Why do you love that style and where do you find your inspo?
L: Oh man, I can’t take credit. I work with such great makeup artists, I’m very, very lucky. Jo Baker especially has helped with that. I think makeup is just an opportunity to decorate yourself, experiment and self-express.

And how would you describe your personal style? Does acting make it harder or easier to find?
L: Easier because I end up adopting the wardrobe of my recent character. And then you don’t have boundaries with the way you dress because it’s constantly being challenged and expanded upon.
K: And you have professionals working on that look who actually know how to put together an ensemble. And you go, oh, that’s how it’s supposed to look! Rather than me trying to figure it out on my own... [Both laugh.]

It’s hard out here 😂 You’ve both been in projects where you’ve got to experiment with costumes from different eras, what was it about this era that you loved?
L: The scale!! How extreme it all was. It’s THE MOST. You had to relearn your spatial awareness because the dresses and [2ft high, btw] wigs are going in every which way.

OMG! Were they comfortable?
L: Oh no, it was fresh hell. But it was worth it – you forget the pain. She says!
