M·A·C'S GUIDE TO EXPERIMENTAL MAKEUP
By Alice Doleman, 15 March 2023
The magic of makeup is all about being able to experiment. That metallic shadow you’re using as blush? Big move. Getting your Bowie on with a bunch of bold liners? Yes plz. It’s all about accepting imperfection and being playful. At ASOS HQ we're obsessed with the experimental makeup of MUAs and creators like @maytahmi, @pradaolic – and, ofc, our fave Glow Up judge Dominic Skinner, aka M·A·C’s Global Senior Artist. Scroll to see some of our fave experimental looks, all created by Dom and his team using M·A·C makeup. Don’t forget to embrace the mess when you give it a go 🤗
OTT OMBRE
We <3 a bit of ombré. For this bold lip look (left), swap your liner for a light eye pencil (like Eye Kohl in Fascinating) and fill with a dark lipstick (use a brush for extra precision). Tap a colourful eyeshadow pigment – Mint Condition Eyeshadow – over the light liner for a ridic reverse ombré, and don’t forget a slick of Lipglass.
For the eyes (above right), start with the lighter colour (you'll need teeny brushes) to trace the shape, before working into it with darker shades. It’s less messy that way, trust us. P.S. drawing just above your crease is the 🔑 to this. Dom used Colour Excess liners in Commitment Issues, Perpetual Shock and Incorruptible.

TWO-TONE TRICKS
How else can you get ALL your fave shades in one look? #Winning! For this lime-green eye, Dom used the Art Library palette mixed with Mint Condition shadow along the water line for standout peepers. Keep the lighter shade in the inner corner for an eye-opening pop, and exaggerate that cat-eye for serious DRAMA 🎭
You could also try a two-toned lip. This style is super easy, but will make you feel like an artiste! Enough to put MUA in your IG bio, we think. Plus, it leaves the cutest kiss marks you eva did see ❤️🔥 You can try *lits* any colour, but we loved the combo of Matte Lipstick in Candy Yum Yum and Heroine. Srsly, M·A·C has plenty to play with 💋 The base was prepped with Strobe Dewy Skin Tint btw – just look at that skin 🫶

BOLDER IS BETTER
We're rly ramping up the experimental vibes now! How many layers of mascara do you want? Yes – that’s the thinking behind Dom’s spidery, thiccccc and luscious lash look. Go OTT with many coats of MACSTACK Mascara, and go back to the 00s with a lighter lip colour – Dom’s team used Studio Fix Concealer to get the shade here. Don’t fight it bb, concealer lips might be 2023’s most surprising trend...
Last but not least, 'draped blush' could be another v extra addition to your makeup rotation. It’s a technique where you blend your blush into your eyeshadow and it’s simply *chef’s kiss*. Prep your skin properly so it glows (Hyper Real Serumizer FTW 🏆) and use a mixture of blushers to create a smooth blend. Dom’s team loved using Glow Play Blush in Groovy and Heat Index here.
