PRO TIPS FOR HEALTHY WINTER SKIN
By Alice Doleman, 29 November 2022
Tis the season for your skin’s #1 enemy – heating. Oh, and the cold. Both are factors that can make it feel v dry or sensitive. Enter: Victoria Evans, Dermalogica’s Education Manager. She's giving us her fab skinsider knowledge to help ensure our skin stays fresh, non-irritated and healthy all winter long. It’s party season, after all, and we want it to glow off ✨ Here's a bunch of tips (incl. how to hydrate when you’re acne-prone) for all skin types and plenty of prods to add into your current routine. It's all about hydrating, cos that skin's thirsty AF 💦
Victoria, SOS! 🚨 How does winter *actually* affect your skin?
Cold temperatures, low humidity, hot showers and central heating all pull moisture from the skin. This lack of moisture weakens your skin's protective barrier, leaving it open to chemicals that cause irritation and sensitivity. Not cute.
It’s giving science lesson. How can we stop irritation, sensitivity and redness from happening?
Replace the lost moisture and increase the humidity around you (where possible, ofc). Do this by putting bowls or vases of water near radiators or investing in a humidifier. Also, drink loads of water! There’s nothing better than hydrating from the inside out. A peppermint tea during winter is my fave ☕️
Noted 💧 Should we be changing our routine for winter?
Switch your foamy face wash to a creamy cleanser (like the Intensive Moisture Cleanser or the Ultra Calming Cleanser) and use a heavier moisturiser than normal. I'd go for the Dermalogica Intensive Moisture Balance. Add a hydrating serum or lightweight facial oil to your daily moisturiser, too. Then layer up with Dermalogica’s Melting Moisture Mask (back soon) and sleep in it overnight – this is about SERIOUS repair.

Love the sound of that! BIG question, do we still need to wear SPF?
YES! UV rays are still around in winter, specifically UVAs that cause skin damage. Keep SPF as the STAR of your AM regimen regardless of the weather to avoid it. I’d recommend the Prisma Protect SPF30.
We get dry skin AND breakouts during winter. Why tho?
This is likely due to dehydration. When skin lacks moisture it produces more oil to compensate, meaning breakouts become worse as the excess oil clogs the pores. To avoid this, we need to increase hydration and add a little extra nourishment to our winter regimen. Side note: Make sure your spot fighting formulas support skin health and don't make it dry or irritated. The AGEbright Clearing Serum – available in the Breakout Clearing Kit – is fab for this.
Cracked lips are always annoying at this time of year, too – how can we avoid those?
AVOID mineral oil or petroleum-based balms as they can end up reducing the production of natural barrier protection. You’ll need to keep reapplying, but your lips will be getting dryer [ed note: THE HORROR 🙀] Instead, nourish with products like the Renewal Lip Complex, which contains rich plant oils like Shea Butter.

No lip balm addictions over here 🚫 What’s the biggest mistake we could make with our skincare at this time of year?
Not properly cleansing and exfoliating. When our skin’s dry, we slather on the moisturiser, but we need to keep removing the buildup of dead skin cells too! Using a gentle daily exfoliant – the Daily Microfoliant helps get the most out of our hydrating serums and oils.
Ohhh ok, what a fab tip! Last up, why is Dermalogica a great choice for our winter routines? 💞
Dermalogica is made with a skin health-first approach, combining the best of science and nature to deliver results. We don't use artificial colours or fragrances that clog and irritate the skin, but use plant oils to nourish and restore! Plus, your routine can be personalised to you – there’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to your best skin.
