Ask any beauty addicts for their fave base products and you might just get the same answer: the NARS Soft Matte trio. The iconic products (a primer, concealer and foundation) are some of the best out there for achieving full coverage without looking cakey or shiny – isn’t that the dream?! AND for the first time EVER, the trio's available on ASOS (*adds to basket immediately*). So we chatted to NARS MUA Rachel Hardie to see how to go into 2022 acing our base ✌️
Can you tell us a little bit about the Soft Matte collection?
It’s ideal for normal to oily skin types. If you have T-zone issues, the products will keep you shine-free without taking away a natural glow. We like to call it the ‘modern matte’ look.

We love the sound of that. So how do we create that look?
The best way to create a beautiful base is to look at the individual needs of the skin first and adapt products and coverage to each area. Online tutorials can be great, but they don't always cater to your own skin.

It's so hard to know how much product to use – what do you recommend?
Less is definitely more! Lots of people overuse products – a 5p-sized amount of primer will be PLENTY to apply all over. The Soft Matte Complete foundation and concealer are also super-pigmented, so you don't need much. I use one or two drops of the foundation for medium-to-full coverage.
Noted. Why is primer so important?
Prepping the skin is key to making your makeup last. It’s all gonna melt off without it – and then what’s the point of all your hard work? 😉 I also love to multi-prime. Using the Soft Matte primer is great for staying shine-free on my T-zone and oily areas, and then I also use the Radiance Primer SPF 35 on my cheeks.

What’s your best tip for using the Soft Matte primer?
I sometimes get shiny during the day, so I often press a pea-sized amount of the primer on those areas to instantly calm down the shine. And don't worry, it doesn't disrupt the makeup underneath!

Ohhh good tip. And how would you get the most out of the Soft Matte foundation?
I always start applying my foundation in the central part of the face – this allows the most coverage and a seamless blend towards the neck.

Do you have any pro advice for using the Soft Matte concealer?
Take your time with it and only pop a tiny amount where it's needed. Apply it in a small cross shape over any blemishes and blend the edges with your brush to get that seamless finish.

Speaking of brushes, what type would you recommend for applying each product?
At NARS we always recommend applying foundation and primer with your fingers. I know it goes against the grain, but it achieves the most beautiful complexion. The warmth of your fingers helps to give a seamless finish and your foundation will look like a second skin. But we do have a gorgeously precise brush made especially for the concealer.

What beauty trend are you loving atm?
OMG. ASOSers NEED to try the lifted-brow trend, where you use your concealer to create that Bella Hadid-esque cat-like look. Following the angle of your waterline, draw a line up towards your temple with your concealer and then blend it out. Then draw a line from the bottom of your eyebrow (that runs parallel to the line you just drew before) and blend this out, too 😽
