We all know that great makeup starts with a great base. It gives your skin that extra somethin'-somethin' and helps the rest of your makeup do its thing (and stay on all day). But putting this into practice isn't always easy. That's why Laura Mercier – the OG makeup brand know for their famous 'Les Techniques' – has created four simple steps to build a luminous finish, so you can nail your base every time. (Spoiler alert: it features the cult translucent setting powder). The basic steps: prime, even the skin tone, conceal and set. Sounds easy, right? Well, to put it to the test, we've got our ASOS Insiders on the case. See how they got on below.

"I’m obsessed with a glowy base 🌟 So, to create my everyday look, I started with the Illuminating Primer followed by the Tinted Moisturizer, which work together perfectly if you're after a natural-looking, fresh-faced result. I have the odd scar so I dabbed a little of the Ultra-Longwear Concealer on these to make my skin more even and I used a brighter shade under the eye area to wake things up. It's an easy step to forget, but setting your makeup is so important to ensure your foundation, mascara, lipstick and so on stays put throughout the day. To do this, I used Laura Mercier's new Translucent Setting Powder in honey, rolling and pressing the formula onto my skin using the velour puff. This translucent powder is one of my faves as it’s undetectable on the skin. Better yet, this new buttery peach shade is ideal for my medium skin tone."

"I used Laura Mercier’s Hydrating Pure Canvas Primer as my base, which made my skin feel refreshed and plumped. Then I applied my Flawless Lumiere Foundation in Cashew; I used a sponge for a super easy and even application and the coverage was great. It evened out my skin tone but was super lightweight, so I could still see my skin underneath – just how I like it! 🥰 Next I covered up blemishes and got rid of any darkness under my eyes with the Flawless Fusion Ultra-Longwear Concealer in 2N. It blended perfectly into the foundation and left little-to-no creasing around my eye! I think I could have used even less than I did to be honest. Lastly, I used LM’s cult product to keep it all in place: the Translucent Setting Powder, which I absolutely LOVE. Oh, and then I topped it all off with a sweep of the Rouge Essentiel in Nude Nouveau on my lips for a pop of colour."

"I only apply makeup where my skin needs it; a small amount can go a long way to create a flawless, luminous result. Since I love a 'no-makeup' makeup look, I went for the Pure Canvas Primer, which is infused with a blend of micronized pearls to brighten your skin, and I followed this with a touch of tinted moisturizer for a really low-key, natural-looking finish. I completed my base with the epic Translucent Setting Powder; this feels so weightless on your skin but it still creates a really glowy finish (not a crease in sight!). My top tip? Don't forget a final touch of colour to finish off the look. My favourite is Laura Mercier's Natural Cheek Colour Blush!"

"After using Laura Mercier's hydrating primer to prep my skin, I opted for Laura Mercier's Tinted Moisturizer instead of foundation. I love how it gave me natural-looking coverage, and left me feeling confident while still embracing my freckles (a great option if you don't like too much coverage or heavy foundation). It also added this amazing glow and luminosity to my skin. Next up, I used a quick dab of concealer under my eyes to brighten up my skin. Finally, to keep it all in place I used the Translucent Setting Powder: the most important step of all! It honestly left my skin looking airbrushed and kept everything in its place throughout the day."
