SOFIA TILBURY TALKS SKINCARE
By Ebony-Renee Baker, 21 July 2020
Not only is Sofia skilled in makeup, she’s well versed in skincare, too. According to her, Charlotte is like a ‘walking skincare bible’ – so we were pumped to pick her brain on everything skincare this week. Check out our interview below… and take notes ✍️
The thing that sets Charlotte Tilbury skincare apart from other brands in my opinion is that it’s about instant results. Charlotte’s been a makeup artist for over 27 years, working on set for magazine cover shoots, prepping celebrities for the red carpet, or models to hit the catwalk – so she knows better than anyone the need for products that have immediate effects. You don’t have 28 days to see results – you need to see them in 28 seconds!
What’s your skincare routine?
Charlotte has always taught me the importance of a rigorous, dedicated skincare routine. I adore makeup, but you can’t have a beautiful painting without a beautiful canvas!
The first thing I do is double-cleanse with the Goddess Cleansing Ritual, then I follow that with the Goddess Skin Clay Mask. This is amazing, because it has Spanish clay and sweet almond oil in it – it’s super-hydrating and makes your skin look and feel baby-smooth. Charlotte sends this to her celebrity clients ahead of a red-carpet event if she knows they won’t have time for a facial. It’s that good!
Finally, I always apply Charlotte’s Magic Cream. It’s the most incredible, supercharged moisturiser, packed with oils and ingredients like hyaluronic acid, bionymph peptide and vitamins C and E to flood your skin with moisture. I use it on every celebrity client I work with to create a glowing, dewy, plumper-looking canvas.
Charlotte’s Goddess Cleansing Ritual is two-step routine for a spa-like experience. You begin with the Citrus Oil Radiance Cleanse, which is a coconut-oil-based, citrus-oil blend that melts your makeup away. It smells so incredible, and I always feel like scent is so important for your mood in the morning and evening! I then follow this with the second ritual, which is a purifying bamboo charcoal cleanse. It draws out impurities and tackles the deeper-rooted environmental dirt, helping to unblock pores and eliminate excess oiliness, which I love.
How did the Magic Cream get its name?
Charlotte’s brand started with her Magic Cream – it was actually the first product she ever launched! Magic Cream was named by all of the supermodels and celebrities who had seen the magic for themselves on set or backstage, and would ask for some of Charlotte’s ‘secret magic cream’! She first began mixing it backstage at shows during Fashion Week, to transform models’ tired, dull skin before makeup, and it became known as an ‘instant miracle’ turnaround cream. There was so much love for the product that she decided to share it with the world! It’s now an iconic, bestselling global phenomenon and has won countless awards.
Charlotte always taught me about the importance of facial massage. Whether I’m applying her Magic Cream on myself or on a celebrity client, I like to take a generous amount – less if your skin is feeling oily. Dot it on the cheeks, forehead and chin, and massage in circular motions. Then I pinch along my jawline and cheekbones, tap my fingers around my eye area and massage up and out with sweeping, open palms to help stimulate lymphatic drainage and micro-circulation.
How should you use the Night Cream? What are its benefits?
Magic Night Cream is like beauty sleep in a jar! So many people swear by it. You only need a tiny amount, as it’s so rich – and it’s jam-packed with supercharged ingredients, like plant stem cells, vitamin E and Retinol, to help improve the look of your skin while you sleep. Your skin actually goes into repair mode while you’re sleeping, so it’s super important to give it the hydration it needs to look refreshed and rejuvenated by morning.
Charlotte is like a walking skincare-and-beauty bible, so I feel like she has given me so many tips and tricks over the years. But one of her very best is something she learned from my grandmother, Patsy Tilbury: it’s so important to protect your skin from the sun. Sit in the shade, wear SPF and always carry a hat in your beach bag!
