JAMIE WINDUST: PROUD TOGETHER
By Jamie Windust, 16 June 2020
As part of our Pride Month takeover, we asked LGBTIQ+ writers and activists from our lineup to write an article for us on whatever they wanted. This is their space to express themselves and talk about issues that are important to them.
First up is Jamie Windust (pronouns: they/them) – an award-winning editor, writer, public speaker and model.
The backbone of the LGBTIQ+ community is the comfort that comes from being surrounded by your chosen family. It’s the feeling of being immersed in a group of siblings that you know will understand who you are, and what you’re going through. Being Proud Together for me is about recognising the ways in which, as a community, we need to constantly be proud of each other, even when we aren’t physically together.
Recently, times have been really hard when we aren’t able to see our trans siblings, our queer friends and chosen family. It’s a reminder that our strength and our pride as a community is borderless, and is often strengthened through adversity. It’s been a time for us to sit within ourselves, and think about who we are, and what makes us happy and fulfilled.
In a world where we are often subject to so much public prejudice and street harassment, we need an increased level of kindness and compassion when we re-emerge from the situation we are in now. We need to be able to feel proud to be who we are, in a world we might not know yet. I will always be proud and uplifted by the trans community, and the joy and brilliance that we all individually own.
