Face mists. These days, there's not a lot they can't do. From hydrating serum mists to refreshing setting sprays, a single spritz can prime and hydrate your skin, set your makeup, fight against acne and, even, help you sleep at night.

So, to prove just how worthy a step they are in your skincare routine, I’ve put six strong contenders through the paces – all with a host of unique skincare benefits to choose from, so you can find the face mist right for you.

Before we begin, let me say I’m a big fan of a face mist. So much so, I keep one in my drawer at work to give my skin a spritz throughout the day. So, I was keen to try the latest face mist from L’Oréal, which comes in the form of a new Shake & Glow Setting Mist. First impressions? It kept my makeup in place, sure, but the real attraction for me was the glowy finish it gave my skin (thanks to coconut water and glycerine's hydrating properties). A great product to keep handy if your skin’s looking a little worse for wear after, or during, a long summer’s day.

Perhaps the most high-tech of formulas around, I was excited to try Emma Hardie’s Plump & Glow Hydrating Mist. It’s created with tiny gold pigments that can boost skin’s radiance, along with hyaluronic acid – one of skincare’s hottest buzzwords to help with dehydrated skin. I found this one to be the most hydrating of all with a long list of moisturising ingredients, such as watermint and velvet flower, to moisturise and soften skin.

I’ve been raving about Starskin’s serum mist for a long time. A serum, toner and primer, a spritz of this post-cleanse (and pre-moisturiser) gives my skin a natural-looking glow, while also prepping skin before makeup. The winning formula? Believe it or not, Prickly Pear Cactus, Starskin’s hero ingredient, has intensely hydrating benefits, and working together with baobab and camellia seed oil, it helps renew and nourish skin’s radiance, so you’re left glowing from the inside out.

Fan of MAC’s Prep + Prime Fix + range? The current object of my affection, MAC’s new limited-edition minis come in five new summer-filled flavours (picture: cooling watermelon, sweet pineapple and refreshing cucumber). These lightweight water mists are a guarantee to keep my makeup in place throughout the day (even after a hot, sweaty commute). And the best part – you can keep them handy in your bag for a refreshing spritz when you need to cool down from the heat.

St Tropez Tanning Mist | ASOS Style Feed

I must admit, I was dubious to try a tanning face mist for obvious reasons. A lot can go wrong. Luckily, I was pleasantly surprised by St Tropez’s streak-free, vegan-friendly water mist. Firstly, by how easy it is to use – you only need a quick spritz before you apply your makeup and you don't need to rinse off. Secondly, and most importantly, my skin was left with a natural-looking tan in minutes without clogging my pores or irritating my skin. Oh, and the tropical scent is great, too.
