FESTIVAL STYLE AT THE GREAT ESCAPE

By Steven Potter, 6 June 2019

Festival season is here. Scorching summer days full of loud music, making memories with your pals and dancing long into the night. Sounds perfect, right? Well, it is, but finding what to wear can be tricky – and the fact you never know what the weather will do doesn't help. For some help styling out whatever the summer brings, take a peek at the looks below from Brighton’s The Great Escape festival.

Naughties but nice

What happens when you take punk styling and sprinkle some 90s/00s influence on top? This festival-goer's sweet look, of course. She's taken a vibrant jacket and kept the rest of the look low-key, with a cropped tee and acid-wash denim. Her accessory game is on point, too, with 90s mini shades and Buffalo boots down below (ideal for those extra couple of inches when the tallest person at the festival stands in front of you).

Cordially invited

There aren’t many items of clothing more suited to festival life than a trusty overshirt. Take a cue from this street styler and steal her stylish-yet-practical look. Not only is that sunburst yellow hue right up there with the season’s key colours, but it’ll also help her stand out if she gets separated from her pals – which always happens. With the patchwork details on her denim matching those PUMA kicks as well, this look gets top marks from us.

Business class

If you’re not the ‘wellies and muddy denim’ type, you can always make like this music lover and add some boardroom chic to your festival get up. Granted, as TGE is a venue-based fest, this look is easier to pull off, but with a statement blazer, neon tee and comfy Air Force 1s she can go from cans on the seafront to VIP after party in zero outfit changes. This is power dressing.

Layered for days

Now, that wool overcoat might not scream ‘summer festival’ but this is Brighton in spring, you know? Changeable temps are the norm and by opting for a vibrant printed tee, relaxed denim and Dr. Martens, she’s prepared for anything from blustery seaside gales to an impromptu heatwave, just by losing the coat. Extra points for the details on that belt, too, considering Western-inspired styles made up Tom Ford, Cushnie and Coach’s SS19 shows.

Sportswear on the glam-up

Comfy glam – the holy grail. A tricky one, for sure, but when you nail it you’d be forgiven for never going back. Kappa trackies and a neon top are giving us all the 90s vibes, but she’s taken it from Sporty Spice to sporty sophis by throwing a chic mac over the top and pairing it with statement sunnies and an animal-print bag. Enjoy that can – you’ve earned it.

Jump for joy

Is there any situation a jumpsuit's not suitable for? No, there isn’t, so the all-in-one look is perfect for festivals. Need more convincing? Well, above is the lead singer of Currls and she’d just played a set in a hot and crowded vintage shop. Can you tell? We couldn't, and all because that lightweight jumpsuit has kept her feeling and looking cool enough to play a gig and get snapped for a street-style piece immediately after her set.
