Just like genderless garms are the new normal, unisex fragrances are on the rise: gone are the days of Old Spice for him and Chanel No.5 for her. Now, new brands like Shay & Blue and Kierin NYC are serving up punchy picks that work wonderfully on everyone. So, it's time to forget everything you thought you knew about perfume, branch out from your usual go-tos and try something new.
Naturally we love mixing up our style to suit our mood, and getting creative with fragrance is an equally great way to shake things up. That’s why we put six new, universal fragrances to the test and used our best perfumer lingo to give you the lowdown. Noses at the ready...
New to ASOS, Kierin NYC's Santal Sky is super-relaxing thanks to its calm, woody fragrance. Inspired by Central Park, it's not too overpowering for an eau de parfum – so it's a wearable choice, perfect for your day-to-day. We’ll be complementing this one with a casual 'fit.

Also inspired by the Big Apple, the Nitro Noir scent feels a bit fancier, making it a great option for the evening or a special occasion. It's the sweetest of the six scents we tried, thanks to its notes of bergamot and pink berries (which we loved). Added bonus: all Kierin fragrances are made with sustainable raw materials. Win.

The 10 a.m. Flirt is on a lighter, more classic vibe. It's got a summery gardenia scent to it, with a hint of fig. If you're experimenting with your perfume, this one is a great way to start. Inspired by NYC's High Line, it feels very airy and fresh.

Shay & Blue fragrances are on the stronger side of things and can be used as all-over body sprays for the daytime, thanks to their summery, fruity flavours. The watermelon one is super-refreshing; we recommend adding it to your post-shower routine in the morning. The bottles are nice and compact, perfect for your hand luggage when travelling.

Out of all the scents we tested, this one by Murdock London is a little heavier due to its musky, woody notes, which include tobacco, basil, nutmeg and pepper. It's warm, with a timeless, familiar feeling. And as for the bottle, this would look good on anyone’s dressing table.
