FIVE OF THE BEST TRAINERS FOR 2019
By Titi Finlay, 19 January 2019
With trainer hype at an all-time high and sneakerheads queueing up for the latest drops across the globe, it’s clear that sporty kicks are the future. But it’s the retro-inspired models that everyone’s coveting, and we’re right there with them. So, here are five of our fave sneaker styles to carry you through 2019 and beyond…
PUMA RS-X Toys
We thought PUMA had finessed the chunky sneaker with its Thunder Deserts in 2018, but the RS-X Toys have taken it to a whole new level. Inspired by classic arcade games and 80s toys (Lego, anyone?), they feel nostalgic, but their blocky, triangular shape gives them a futuristic element. Get ready to flex this brand-new red colourway when summer (finally) rolls around.
In what was probably the hottest double drop of 2018, adidas brought back its 1997 classic Falcon Dorf in two updated versions: the Yung-1 and its edgy sister, the Falcon. As if its OG colourways weren’t already cool enough, it’s back for 2019 with a whole new seleccy of hues and metallic accents.
Who remembers kickin’ it on the playground after athletics in a pair of these? Reebok’s 90s running shoe (created by the designer of the Nike Air Max 97) made a major comeback towards the end of 2018 and it’s sticking around in fresh, spring-appropriate colourways. Pair these minty kicks with light-washed jeans or introduce them to your workout wardrobe for serious gym steez.
Nike Zoom 2K
Following the hype of the M2K Tekno (AKA the ultimate dad trainer), Nike has continued its retro streak with the Zoom 2K. With features similar to the 1991 Jordan VI, it’s got an old-school basketball feel, but the branded lace loops and sock-like cuff give it that 2019 update. This black-and-white colourway is a favourite with sneakerheads, so expect major street cred whenever you wear them.
adidas Originals Sleek Shoes
It’s fashion gospel that a pair of clean white sneakers can make any outfit look fresh and new (talk about a wardrobe staple). These newbies from adidas Originals are a sort of Stan Smith/Continental hybrid, meaning they’ve got an uber-classic vibe while the touch of neon on the sole keeps them current. If you’re looking for a pair of white sneaks to match everything in your wardrobe, literally, we recommend these babies.
