STYLE LESSONS FROM THE CHILLING ADVENTURES OF SABRINA
By Eleanor Dunne, 2 December 2018
The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is our new Netflix obsession. OK, at first we were shook by how scary it is in comparison to the original 90s version. But then we quickly fell in love with the show’s sinister storyline, intriguing characters, underlying social messages and – of course – its bewitching style. From headbands to gothic lace, 'Brina and her crew serve up some serious fashion inspo for our winter repertoire. Here are five key trends that will bring the magic to your look, stat.
Hairbands are our new hero
TBF, Sabrina’s hairband should have its own shoutout in the show's credits as one of the main characters. Whether she’s hanging with her human friends or battling the Weird Sisters at the Academy of the Unseen Arts, her headband is ever-present. If your outfit is giving you more trouble than Batibat the sleep demon, this is one accessory that magically pulls it all together. Plus, it gets extra points for banishing a bad hair day, too.
Lace summons the drama
There are lots of lace looks throughout the show to help bring the gothic realness. Our fave is when Sabrina wears her mother’s wedding dress to her friend's Halloween party (and her dark baptism, which she pops to afterwards – as you do). Even though Halloween is over, we might just spook 'em with a similar style at one of our party-season soirees.
A slinky slip dress casts a spell
Although the new version of Sabrina has none of the lols of the Melissa Joan Hart version, it does have some nice 90s fashion moments, like the old show. Take the slip dress ’Brina magically changes into at her dark baptism. While the scene had us on the edge of our seats, we must admit the oh-so-pretty frock did distract us for a sec. We smell another scarily good party option. Make like this street styler and pair it with cosy shearling to beat the chill.
A red coat makes everything better
The show is dark AF coat cheers up even the most dreary of scenes, giving us a lesson in how outerwear can enliven our cold-weather lives. We’ll be throwing a cosy scarlet number over everything this season for a frightfully good look.both in its creepy storyline and overall colour scheme. But throughout, Sabrina’s ’fits manage to brighten things up with some fresh autumnal hues. In particular, her red
Hot under the collar
We must confess, the Weird Sisters are our new style icons. Yes, their 'harrowing' of Sabrina is pretty evil – but they look so good while they're doing it. As well as dark lips and up-dos, the evil trio have reintroduced us to the power of the Peter Pan collar – and we’re not sure what we were doing without it. Wear a collar bib under jumpers and dresses already in your wardrobe and, hey presto: a tired looks gets transformed. Magic indeed.
