MEET YSEULT, THE FRENCH TRIPLE THREAT

France got to know Yseult four years ago when she was a contestant on Nouvelle Star (France's equivalent to The X Factor). Since then she's been working on her first music video, recording new music and starring in ASOS campaigns. For our Autumn 18 issue, ASOS Magazine caught up with singer, songwriter and model – read on for excerpts from their conversation and find the full interview in the ASOS Magazine, available here

What's happened in the four years since Nouvelle Star?

I stopped working on my personal projects and started collaborating with other artists. Last April, for example, my former label organised a writing seminar with The Black Eyed Peas. I was 22, I couldn't believe it! Will.i.am is ultra-impressive and super-thorough, and I learned a lot from him. But now I'm ready to move forward with my own projects. I've changed a lot in the past four years even though my voice is still very pop. These days, I'm working with beat makers who have a very different approach to music and I dig it.

You're very active on Instagram. How do you use the platform?

Instagram is my tool, it's where I find the creatives, photographers and directors who I get in touch with to work on my projects. My generation is full of incredibly talented people and Instagram gives us the most amazing platform. For the last year and a half, my account has become me. I used to lack confidence, I didn't dare to speak, to assert myself and show my true colours.

You've appeared in several ASOS campaigns over the past year. What's the impact been?

It gave me a massive boost. I was on a break of sorts when ASOS got in touch to model for my first-ever campaign and it was yet another incredible platform. I got a whole bunch of new followers and they found out that I was also an artist. And I got to meet stylists, hairdressers and photographers who gave me loads of advice.

Are there any designers you love?

I ain't gonna lie, most designers don't make clothes I can fit in. I used to get really frustrated when I was younger, but not anymore. The narrative has evolved – today, you can be cool without having to wear designer stuff. What matters is your personal style. More than designers, American and British female artists inspire me. Jorja Smith, Mabel, Princess Nokia, they are 100% themselves and have confidence in who they are. In France, if you say, 'I dig myself,' people think you're pretentious.
