INSPIRATION AND ADVICE

HOW ASOS INSIDERS DO HOLIDAY STYLE

Summer is the season where you need more sartorial tricks up your sleeve than ever before. Unlike winter, when all you require is a sweater and a big dressing gown coat, the long hot months are typically punctuated by every kind of event going – from festivals to vacays to city breaks and country retreats. But what to pack? We took some inspiration from the ASOS Insiders to decode your summer suitcase.

Boat life

OK, you’re on holiday and you’ve got those vacation vibes sussed with all manner of flouncy cotton dresses and embroidered tops. You’ve booked a boat trip to soak up some serious rays and packed a picnic (plus a little Aperol), because you’re on Lake Como, gal. But what do you wear all day? You’ll need more than a swimsuit to protect you from the rays. Denim shorts are essential, then. Perfect when worn during the day with a crop top-style bikini — just pack a slinky cami for night time to get maximum usage out of your denim.

The road trip

Think of a road trip and Britney Spears immediately comes to mind — we blame the 2002 coming of age drama, Crossroads, when Britters, Zoe Saldana and Taryn Manning jump in a retro convertible car and travel from their native Georgia to the tabletops of Los Angeles. So, with this spirit in mind, you’ll need something cool and comfy — and sneakers, so you’re dressed for any adventure. A dungaree dress in this cute plaid is foolproof, while wearing it with one shoulder down and a crop underneath will provide an urban look.

The country break

Who said the country had to all be wellington boots, plaids and neutral tones? Reinvent the country wardrobe with colourful flashes and directional sportswear — after all, it’s far easier to get undressed to go swimming in that lake or waterfall you just stumbled across if you’re wearing a pair of sports shorts and sliders. Contrast orange trackie shorts with a summery Hawaiian-print shirt for a directional look — the white sunglasses and checkerboard sliders are the only accessories you’ll need. Well, that and a swimsuit, of course.

The festival

Is it just us or are we all getting bored of seeing those spangly sequinned outfits so ubiquitous with the festival circuit that it’s starting to look a bit old? Channelling an altogether different mood in the fields this year will look highly original – and trust us, you’ll be thankful for the sartorial switch-up when the heavens open and you’re not wearing a pair of sparkly knickers with fishnet. A denim dungaree is absolutely essential — giving off that laid-back nonchalance reminiscent of Gwen Stefani in the 90s. Pair with the ultimate throwback accessory, the bucket hat, while a cute little gingham crop top gives it a girlish edge. Now, to the moshpit?

Jet-setter

Paris? New York? San Francisco? Whatever city is on your agenda this summer, we’ve got your back. The trick is to pack things that can be mixed and matched to make the most of your hand luggage holdall. Sneakers are an absolute must for pounding the pavements — bonus points are that these chunky dad sneakers seem to be showing no signs of slowing down. Pair them with a little white ankle sock for a cutesy but cool look. A simple dress that won’t crease or take up lots of space is essential — this dungaree option comes with the added zip detail for a bit of fun, while the plaid under top keeps the look distinctly 90s.
