RETRO SUMMER KNITS ARE WHERE IT'S AT
By Grace Cook, 24 July 2018
There are some trends that are so ubiquitous during summer, they almost never go out of style. Floral dresses, for example. Crop tops. Slides. But sometimes fashion surprises us. One of the more unexpected trends to come out this season is the prevalence of retro knitwear. Knitwear for summer? Yes, really. And it’s a trend that transitions into AW18, seen at the likes of Prada, Erdem and Simone Rocha. From the runways to the street, knitwear is being given a vintage edge – like classic golfing sweaters or tonal 60s colour palettes. And best thing about it is you can keep wearing it long after you’ve packed away your cotton dresses…

Nicolas Ghesquière’s Louis Vuitton collections are forever grounded in a futuristic reality – this season, his army of models descended from a spaceship at the Louvre, in scenes curiously reminiscent of Spiceworld The Movie but with fewer platform boots. But for his knitwear, the designer took a decidedly vintage approach. The classic Scottish Argyle sweater is back, and is perfect styled with 90s-style bootleg trousers and a slinky chain belt.

Knitwear was everywhere during the Paris couture shows earlier this month. Here, this street-styler shows how to turn a sweater into the perfect summer statement, by teaming it with a mini leather skirt in a cutesy shade of lemon. The button-down front adds a 90s feel to the swirly 60s pattern, and the white sunglasses and bag keep it looking fresh. Knit on, legs out.
