INSPIRATION AND ADVICE
WHAT TO WEAR IN A HEATWAVE
By Sophie Davis, 5 July 2018
Yep – it's happened again, people. You spend all year praying for a heatwave to rock up, and when it happens, you're thrown. What to wear to work that looks smart but won't make you pass out on the bus? How to get through everyday life without melting? Well, these street-stylers have some answers for you.

Bold shoulders
If you like to switch it up when it comes to necklines – a halter top here, a bandeau there – the bardot dress is your tan-line eliminating friend. This flowing maxi in navy (a great hot-weather alternative to black) is the perfect high-low mix of chic and casual. This is how to look put-together while still sunning those shoulders.

Tee it up
Got a meeting at 4pm then an appointment with a pub garden at 5pm? Take inspiration from this street-styler in Milan. A white tee under a slip dress makes it work-appropriate (and will keep you warm if your boss has the office air-con whacked up). Then as soon as it's clocking-off time, you can lose the tee quicker than you can say: 'Quick, there's a table.' Extra points for the white mules, too.

90s vibes
There's a lot to love here. The laid-back knotted white shirt (the easiest – and coolest – styling trick for summer, BTW). The black legging shorts. The lashings of gold jewellery and bright-red chain-handle bag. The fact that the whole look channels 90s-era Neneh Cherry is just the icing on the cake.

Sunny side up
As the saying goes: if you can't beat 'em, join 'em. This Paris Fashion Week attendee has taken this advice literally, dressing up as the sun in a bright-yellow wrap dress. The flouncy cut and balloon sleeves make things breezy and she keeps all the focus on the dress with a classic tan bucket bag and white shoes.

Printed palazzos
If dresses aren't your thing, let this Paris showgoer be your inspiration. A simple black vest and lightweight, 90s-style loose trousers is a classic combo to beat the heat. Those pale-blue colour-pop sneaks liven up the monochrome palette nicely, too. Also good for sitting on the grass in the park any way you like.
