HOW ASOSERS DO HAWAIIAN PRINT
By Maybelle Morgan, 24 May 2018
Elvis in the 1960 classic Blue Hawaii. An open-shirted Leo breaking hearts in Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet. Yes, Hawaiian print is iconic, and for SS18, we’re witnessing its revival. The best part? It’s as 90s gaudy and summer feelgood as ever. Whether you’re going full-on tropical or just making a leaf-clad nod to the trend, check out how the ASOS staff are styling it up their way…

Getting shirty
Endless film references confirm that the easiest and most efficient route into the trend is the Hawaiian shirt. Bright, bold and a kitschy move on from spring’s florals, Rosie wears hers in monochrome, with slightly more subdued shades. Tied at the waist and worn oversized to give it a cropped, boxier fit, when paired with skinny white jeans, it makes for the perfect silhouette. Low-top skate sneaks round off the casual look nicely.

Blue jean, baby
It’s not just your top half that's at risk of the print invasion this season. Classic denim staples – in this case, 90s light-wash mom jeans – get a bloom-heavy makeover too. Huge, painterly floral appliqué winds up the leg, which Morgan complements with a magenta cardigan, worn buttoned up, granny-chic style. Chunky Nike Air Force 1s make the look daytime appropriate, and the baby-blue socks peeking out at the ankle add yet another retro wink.

With the band
There’s no better place for your Hawaiian prints than in your festival wardrobe. The sun’s shining, the styling possibilities are endless. And for your own risqué nod to the trend, follow in the footsteps of Olivia with a teensy tropical-print bandeau to brighten up your strong double-denim getup. A white denim jacket layered over the top offers some brightness, while the dark-wash, raw-edge jeans invoke a cooler, grungier vibe. To finish? Festival-friendly stompy Dr. Martens, plus layers of gold necklaces.

Yellow mellow
For an oh-so-pretty twist, Titi enlists the help of a crop top awash with a bright-yellow print and tie waist. A green bandeau peeping out from underneath adds some depth, but the look gets a street-style twist with some super-90s high-waisted denim joggers. Chunky, stone-coloured sneaks keep all eyes on the upper half.
