TREND: THE CARDIGAN TOP
By Maybelle Morgan, 17 May 2018
Often associated with your dear old nan, or, in its 90s heyday, more widely known as the uniform of grunge frontman Kurt Cobain, the cardigan has made a comeback for SS18. This time around, though, the vibe is decidedly vintage-retro, and rather than limited to just a cover-up piece, it’s worn buttoned up as your new spring top with a kitsch difference.

Eclecticism was rife at Balenciaga for SS18 – with modern-and-retro influences seamlessly blending together for unapologetically bad-taste looks, which somehow… just worked. Cropped sugary pastel cardies were emblazoned with slogans, scenic backgrounds covered utility-style mom jeans, and pretty pointed retro courts threatened to inflict damage with rows of punky spikes. And accessories followed the same route: a black bum bag slung across the body for a major street-style shoutout, accompanied by fancy stone drop earrings.

If you’re more about taking the cardie back to its roots, opt out of the all-over clash but follow in Balenciaga’s footsteps when it comes to buttoning it up and wearing it as a crop top. ASOS Insider Lotte has this look down and uses the 70s-vibes mustard top to usher in summer dressing. Floral wide-leg trousers (with hints of yellow, no less) up the pretty and matching buttery-yellow pumps make for a solidly vintage-style colour palette. To finish? A perspex grab handle bag to add some tacky texture.

Let us introduce you to the summer-personified cardigan, to be worn buttoned up just like ASOS Insider Lotte. We’re loving the dreamy sunshine-coloured mustard, ribbing and 70s sports-tipping – but it’s the contrast frill-rippled sleeve that nails the granny-chic aesthetic. To avoid going too whimsical, pair it with black raw-edge jeans, minimal white sneaks and a straw bag for a nod to the warmer weather.
