GRAPHIC EYELINER IS DOING THE MOST
By Maybelle Morgan, 11 May 2018
Futuristic discs at Tom Ford, blocky stripes at Jason Wu and etchy, geometric shapes at John Galliano, your trusty eyeliner is being put through its paces for SS18. So if you want to deviate from the standard cat-eye this season, it’s all about graphic lines to take your summer/festival beauty looks to the next level. And you don’t have to go colouring-book crazy – here’s the first-time makeup guide to nailing it…
What winged liner? For SS18, the models at Eudon Choi went completely against the beauty grain, showcasing something a little extra backstage. Rather than following the arch of the eye, a precise line hovered above the lid crease, and then on reaching the end of the brow bone, zigzagged like a heart monitor line. The focus was kept on the directional eyes, with the rest toned down: hair in a pulled-back ponytail, buffed complexions, subtle brushed-up brows and just a hint of rosy lip balm.
For a first-timer, geometric lines or patterns can seem like a terrifying feat. Follow in the footsteps of ASOS Insider Sophia, who is proof that the simplest move can also be the most effective. Positioned perfectly between the upper lashline and the bottom of the brow bone, a gently sloping arc of liner follows the shape of the brow. Top tip: keep it thin and minimal to make it day-appropriate. Sophia keeps the rest of her makeup as normal: strong brows and a sleek cat-eye. Thumbs up.
Try it out
To try the trend yourself, take a leaf out of ASOS Insider Sophia’s book and keep it dressed-down. Brushed-up brows, fresh skin and subtle winged liner make a solid base. Then above the eye, draw a simple curved line that follows the shape of the brow. Opt for a thicker pen style like this NYX one for a better grip. Bonus? The softer felt-tip pen requires less precision and won’t leave a dreaded gory smudge if you make a mistake. If you want to take the look on your next night out, just add a bold magenta lip for a strong 80s vibe.
