INSPIRATION AND ADVICE

STREET-STYLE TAKEAWAYS FROM MELBOURNE

Pretty much every year around this time, things can feel a little uninspired. Sure, the weather is picking up, but there’s no more fashion-month-long-deluge of street-style bliss filling our feeds everyday, right? Nope, wrong, way off. We had totally forgotten that this is when our Aussie fashion friends take the sartorial torch. Happily, the very best looks from the Melbourne Fashion Week (aka Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival) are in, serving up four long-weekend wardrobe delicacies.

Missed you, mum

The 00s revival of jeans and a fancy top was a revelation for winter nights out, but now there’s a very cool way to work it for those Easter Sunday fam plans too. There’s two things to note here, first up is that the jeans should be straight leg or mom fit, preferably with a frayed hem. Second is the accessories. What makes this feel totally 2018 is the playful bag – a woven or straw kinda-beachy bag is just the ticket to bring this whole shebang up to date.

And she’s off

There’s a lot of things about minibreaks which are epic, not feeling freezing being the number one. Ice cream is usually the second. But style-wise, apart from a few essential items, you can find yourself in a bit of a uniform of sundress and sneakers. That’s why picking a pair of fashion sunnies is key. These white wide-rimmed pair are the most non-basic ones we’ve seen, and aren’t too peacocky either.

Just browsing thanks

Stripes are such an important pattern, they’ve managed to become an actual wardrobe staple (hello Breton top). But SS18 has other things in mind for the much-loved lines. Striped suits are already happening, and now our laid-back ladies in Australia are making striped separates a casual thing, too. Add a slogan cross-body bag for the very best of looks for your shopping and brunching plans.

I can’t, I’m working

If you were shopping in any sort of serious way last year, you’ll probably have two key items: a statement shirt, and an asymmetric midi-length occasionwear dress. And the likelihood of both of those items having ruffles on them is huge. Fast forward to this fashion week and this wonder woman has just served up a styling trick to give both items a new lease of life for 2018. Layer 'em up and add chunky leather heels for the smartest workwear update around.
