STYLING

HOW ASOSERS DO TAILORING

By Caroline Ferry, 15 March 2018

So the glorious decade that brought us Working Girl for wardrobe inspiration is back, and with it comes a whole tailoring moment. At ASOS HQ, we've really embraced suiting up, 80s style – such is our way – and here's how some of our staff are rocking their tailored treasures this week.

Suits her sneaks

Skirt suits are really great, but a flippy mini version just won’t fly in most offices. Rosaria’s two-piece has that longer-line houndstooth blazer for all the smarts, but a perfect fit and beaut blue hue means, like her, you’ll end up wearing this guy at the weekends too with trainers and a tee.

Animal instinct

If you thought animal print was just for BNOs or the odd accessory, it’s fair to say Celia has put that rumour to rest. How do you make an entirely leopard-print suit look genuinely cool? Make like our girl and add your favourite basics: a cosy grey turtleneck, go-to grungy black boots and all the rouge lipstick. Boom!

Midi magic

The most 80s thing you can do, style-wise, is to play with proportions in a way that ignores everything recent wisdom has taught you. 2018 would have us believe that if you’re short, you might like to give the illusion of tallness by elongating your legs. Oh no, not the 80s. If you like a longline blazer, throw it on. Add a midi into the mix? Go for it friend. And ankle boots? Hell, why not. It shouldn’t work, but dammit it does.

Walk the line

A big ole wool suit isn’t for everyone, that’s fair enough. So give the illusion of suit dressing by matching your shirt and trousers instead, the perfect balance between suit levels of swish and pyjama levels of comfort. Add box-fresh white trainers for weekend plans, or a pair of white pointed courts for the 9-5.

Retro fit

Perhaps the most amazing tailoring of all comes via Lotte – who, by combining her 40s-inspired ASOS WHITE double-breasted skirt suit with her very favourite and very 80s red ankle boots, has mixed up a look that is actually very 2018. Inspired.
