STYLE LESSONS FROM THE OSCAR FILMS
By Maybelle Morgan, 25 February 2018
It’s the most wonderful time of the year (sorry, Christmas), where our cinema screens and social media feeds are flooded with all things Oscar-related in the buzzy lead-up to the awards. And this year is no exception, with the impressive line-up telling powerful tales with female leads at their hearts. And with nomination nods to the likes of Lady Bird, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and I, Tonya, it’s hard not to notice a fair few unlikely style icons lighting up our screens. So, here’s how to nail Oscar-worthy style…
Exactly like we’d expect the world of 90s figure skating to look, Margot Robbie dons endless gaudy lycra pieces in her portrayal of infamous ice skater, Tonya Harding. It was flashy, trashy and a time when permed fringes reigned supreme. Practice your own triple axel in this high-neck beaded dress with retro ruffled skirting. Go from the rink to IRL with these white pointed boot dupes, and finish with a velvet scrunchie for extra retro.
Greta Gerwig’s debut as a solo director sees Saoirse Ronan play a plucky teen dealing with love, friendship and family in the last year of high school. Set in the early 00s, it’s nostalgia-central, with a throwback pop soundtrack (any film that features JT’s Sexy Back is all right with us) and on-point retro grunge garms. It’s all about neat 90s layering with a check slip dress over a plain white tee, plus Mary Jane brogues and a boxy cross-body to up the preppy factor. Finally, layered silver necklaces add that quintessentially eclectic teen vibe.
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
In this black comedy about vengeance and forgiveness, Frances McDormand plays a grieving mother who will stop at nothing to get justice for her murdered daughter. Her no-nonsense outfit (that she wears for the entire duration of the film) is equal parts functional mechanic and bandana-clad warrior. Going hard on the utility wear, she layers a navy boilersuit over red jersey and wreaks havoc in sturdy lace-up work boots.
