SUMMER STYLE LESSONS FROM NETFLIX SHOWS
By Sophie Davis, 29 June 2018
It’s super-hot out there, so if you need to take a breather and seek shelter indoors with a cold drink and a box set, you're not alone. And with the second season of GLOW out today, there's even more reason. Yep, there are very few things a solid series binge can’t fix, and if it can also serve up some worthy style vibes at the same time? Even better. Check out the most stylish Netflix shows giving us summer inspiration right now…
GLOW
Ladies’ wrestling, pop rock, coughloads of hairspray. There’s so much to love about GLOW being back. Not least the fact that the 80s is a huge trend for SS18. OK, so a high-leg neon leotard might get you a few stares on the bus, but pastels like Rhonda's are a wearable summer winner. Head-to-toe sorbet shades were big news at Victoria Beckham and Preen, and are surprisingly easy to pull off IRL. For extra points, mix your pastels like street-styler Florrie Thomas with her pink jumpsuit and yellow bag. If you look like an ice-cream sundae, you’re doing it right.
The End of the F***ing World
First course of action if your status is suddenly 'wanted teenage runaway'? Adopt a disguise and go under the radar, obviously. Alyssa may be limited to charity shop swag, but with her button-down tea dress in moody florals, saucer shades and Courtney Love hairdo – well, there's a serious aesthetic going on here. This street-styler stops short of an emergency peroxide train-station hairdo, but her printed dress and huge shades nail the look in a more put-together, less 'on-the-run' way.
Lovesick
It's not just the 'will they won't they' romance between uni mates Dylan and Evie we love – it's Evie's low-key, eclectic style. If your general take on occasionwear is: 'Do I really have to dress up for this thing?' then take note. A cotton sun dress and print-clashing kimono-style jacket make for a casual, chilled pairing with a little nod to SS18. This street-styler makes her combo day-appropriate with chunky flat sandals and a matching cross-body bag. Too cool.
Stranger Things
When it comes to serious 80s nostalgia, it doesn't get much better than Stranger Things. The spooky goings-on and slammin’ synthy soundtrack have captivated fans for two seasons, but the perfectly on-point retro outfits are what's turned our obsession next-level. Eleven's prom look is all puff sleeves, statement belt and oversized shapes. Fast-forward to now, and it has just as much style currency, with this street-styler opting for a minimalist black palette to freshen up the deal.
Everything Sucks!
Set in the mid-90s in Boring, Oregon (yep, it's a real place), Everything Sucks follows a misfit gang of kids as they deal with the trials and tribulations of high school. Style-wise, you’re in for a nostalgic treat: think retro button-through shirts, heart-shaped shades, boxy denim jackets and more kitschy polka dots than you could shake a 2018 street-styler at.
