A WHOLE NEW REASON TO LOVE THE TEA DRESS
By Grace Cook, 28 July 2018
The tea dress will perennially be in style. They’ve been prevalent in women’s wardrobes since the 1940s, when chic housewives would style them up with seamed tights and red lips. But today’s tea dress is cooler and younger – made cult again by brands like Ganni, Rixo and Reformation. It’s frillier and more feminine, with fresh prints and modern cuts and looks great styled with trainers or flats. Our favourite new tea dress comes in white, and is more likely seen at a festival or a summer rooftop than serving up slices of cake. Here’s everything you need to know about the new LWTD – little white tea dress – your new season wardrobe BFF.
Christopher Kane doesn't often do girlie, but when he does, he totally nails it. This broderie-anglaise daisy-print style hits all the tea dress traits on the head. Fitted waist? Check. Fit-and-flare-hem? Check. But Kane makes the style cool with the oversized peplum frill and sheer fabric, not forgetting the statement Edwardian collar reminiscent of something seen in The Virgin Suicides or Anne Of Green Gables (our latest Netflix obsession). This is one to get your big pants out for, which hits another trend on the head – after all, minimalism in the underwear drawer is so fetch right now. Perfect paired with a pair of quirky heels – these gingham ones continue to channel the childlike-cool vibe Kane seems to be going for. Wear it to garden parties or weddings and pretend you're Vivienne at the polo in Pretty Woman.
Could this look be any more summer appropriate? We spotted this street-styler in Paris during the couture shows earlier this month. In crisp white cotton with a peplum frill skirt and a polka-dot print, this dress is one of the most versatile styles out there right now – perfect worn during hot summer days in the city, but equally appropriate for a party when styled with a heel. Big up the senorita references with a slicked-back bun and a detailed flat like this bow-trimmed mule. A beaded string bag makes the perfect accessory for this look.
Try it on
Cute and cool, this polka-dot dress is the perfect little white tea dress no matter the occasion. Perfect for hot days thanks to the bardot neckline – and even more ideal to show off that summer glow – the slimline silhouette of the skirt keeps it from being super-formal. Perfect worn with a basket bag to hit two trends in one – we all know the wicker basket is pretty much the bag of the season – and dress it down with white Converse and a pair of ankle socks.
