STYLE FILES

Five minutes with rising star Sasha Lane

With the release of her first movie American Honey (out 14 October – it's great, btw), sitting FROW at Louis Vuitton during Paris Fashion Week and attending the likes of Cannes Film Festival, it's fair to say that 2016 has been a v big year for actress Sasha Lane. You're about to be obsessed with the coming of age American road movie (featuring Riley Keough and Shia LaBeouf) and its star in the making…

How did you first get into acting?

I didn't want to pursue it at all, it was not an interest of mine – but maybe the idea of playing a character and making people feel things appealed to me because I connect with movies so much. Honestly, I was on the beach last year Spring Breaking, and Andrea Arnold [the director] and Amy [now her manager] came up to me and told me about the film. She came back to my hotel to talk, then the next day I hopped in her car and it went from there.

What was it about American Honey that you were drawn to?

I knew my character (Star) would be a strong one and I liked the idea of that part of America being represented: the kids who no one looks at and who get labelled as the discard kids.

Fave part of making the film?

Probably the fact that we really formed connections – the crew became my team. Of course, you have your ups and downs, but we truly did bond, which is why it flowed so nicely.

Describe your style...

Super. Chill. It ranges from really loose and baggy and kind of like, my form of being a G, to extremely girlie but mixed with something else. I like little details on things.I love my adidas flowy skirt because it’s sporty but also cute and comfortable. The 90s is my favourite.

Are there any beauty products you're into?

I just like a lot of different oils – Moroccan oil and coconut oil are both really good. Plus, sea salt spray is great for me because then I don’t have to use hairspray and I love that and keep it natural. Oh, and a solid scrunchie.

Dream role?

I really want to do an animation. I wanna be some hippie little caterpillar slinking her way through life – I think that would be so amazing, to have a bit of fun with something. I'm just gonna put that in the universe, you know.

Music is a huge part of American Honey, what's on your playlist?

Right now, I love Leon Bridges; and I really dig Aurora.

What's next?

I’m truly floating, I have a lot of ideas and things lined up that are coming soon, but my whole thing is just staying really open because you never know what will happen in the next five minutes, let alone the future.
