OUR FAVE 2021 MET GALA LOOKS
September 14, 2021
After a four-month delay, the steps of New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art were once again drippin' in sauce for this year's long-awaited Met Gala. Joining Billie Eilish (just the youngest co-chair in the event's history, NBD) was a guest list of celebs, TikTok stars (a Gala first!), fashion designers and more, each wearing a look to represent this year's theme: 'In America: A Lexicon of Fashion'. From star-spangled gowns and all things red, white and blue to powerful political messages, the guests kept it coming with their takes on the theme. We've rounded up the night's most head-turning looks, so you can get your five-min red-carpet fix, right here👇
Billie Eilish in Oscar de la Renta
Did you do a double-take to check if this was Lady Gaga, a Hollywood siren resurrected from the 1950s or one of Gen Z's most influential women? Us, too. Co-chair of the event Billie Eilish hung up her usual repertoire of dark layers to hit us with a heavy dose of old-school glamour in this blush tulle gown, and we're here for it. Belle of the ball? Her name's Billie.
Saweetie in Christian Cowan
Living up to her 'Icy Girl' name, the rapper served B-O-D-Y in this jewel-encrusted number. With subtle flashes of red, white and blue (why wear one color when you can wear three?), Saweetie's look featured over 10 million crystals (naturally) and both the Black American Heritage and Filipino flags to create a train we do not wanna be late for.
Lorde in Emily Bode
Oh Lordey, Lordey, Lordey, we stan this Lady Liberty cosplay. Her heavily-embellished white two-piece nods to one of America's most famous monuments (and makes a serious case for going-out separates) – and all with a headpiece that just hits different. Made using repurposed antiques, the gold beaded accessory feels like a fresh take on the tiara, and TBH we want one. Like, now.
Rihanna in Balenciaga Couture
As the final celeb to step out on the carpet last night, Rihanna delivered exactly what we'd expect: a moment. Wearing a beanie hat, diamond choker and a coat that serves drama by the bucketload, this look perfectly synced high glamour with RiRi's gives-no-efs attitude 🤝
Gigi Hadid in Prada
When it comes to the steps of the Met, one thing's for sure: you can count on a supermodel to WERK them. Hadid somehow manages to look equally from the past and future in this structured gown, thanks to the long leather gloves, slick red ponytail and (seen from the back) jewel-encrusted tights. This is a lesson in accessorizing and we're taking notes ✍️ for our next big night out.
Indya Moore in Saint Laurent
She wasn't a lead character in Pose for nothing, honey! Workin' her epic buzz cut, which she debuted this summer, the actor, model and activist proved red carpets have room for more than just gowns. Her contrasting white shorts and voluminous top (complete with train, obvs!) is a pairing we can't wait to put into practice this party szn.
Emma Chamberlain in Louis Vuitton
In what marked a first for the 73-year-old event, TikTokers, YouTube stars and social-media moguls were in abundance last night, led by 19-year-old star Emma Chamberlain. Her look featured 21,000 microbeads, 9,000 rhinestones, 2,500 sequins, over 2,300 Rococo-style beads and nearly 2,000 Swarovski crystals. Yeah, that's A LOT of ice, but its nowhere near the number of subscribers, followers and fans this Gen-Z royal has racked up. Main-character energy? Emma invented it ✨
Kim Kardashian in Balenciaga Haute Couture
This is Kim Kardashian. Shook? Us, too. Unlike anything she (or anyone else tbh) has worn to the Met before, KK swapped her usual glam vibes for something statement-making in a whole new way. Keeping her face totally covered throughout her red-carpet walk, the crowd was kept guessing as to who this mysterious guest was, and if THAT isn't the energy you want to bring to your next party entrance, we don't know what is 🙃
