THE ASOS 2020 ROUND-UP

Our 2020 roundup is here! It’s been a rollercoaster year but, ever the optimists, we’re taking a moment to celebrate the wins: from the big (like our Circular Fashion collection and HUGE TikTok campaign) to the small (like a certain silver chain). So grab a cuppa, sit back and enjoy the ride as we talk through our best bits below…

MOST VIEWED: ASOS DESIGN

You were showing us the love in 2020 with 273 million views of ASOS DESIGN products 🤩 But the real star of the show was our jersey top, which beat out dresses in a serious 2020 plot twist (we blame the Zooms) with 112 million views.

COLLUSION

The results are in, the votes are counted and we’re buzzing to announce that you were LOVING the ASOS-exclusive COLLUSION this year. It was searched a totally casual 7.1 million times and worn by 1.5 million of you ❤️️ No biggie!

BIG ON BEAUTY

With our beloved salons closed *sob*, you took to the virtual shelves to get your beauty fix: hair sales went up 278%, skincare 94% and bath/body 332%. Already a big part of our pre-COVID lives, face masks (no, not that kind) got a lot of lockdown love, too (we sold 290,000 from March to August).

Beauty’s next big thing? Streamlining formulas and cutting down on packaging, as well as a move away from multi-step routines. Watch this space, 2021.

THE ORDINARY

Speaking of beauty, The Ordinary was 2020’s biggest hitter. We sold one of their complexion-boosting, skin-soothing products every 2 seconds. Glow you.

STAYCATION

In moves worthy of an Islander, you bought a total of 44,000 tanning mitts, 150,000 bikini sets and 2.9 million millilitres of nail polish this summer. It’s good to see everyone made the most of the sunshine, even with lockdowns across the world…

THAT CHAIN

Worldwide swooning, a 140K-strong fan account and a 70% increase in ‘neck chain’ sales on ASOS. We stan an icon: Connell’s Chain.
Leigh-Anne Pinnock style edit | The Best Trends Of The Year | ASOS 2020

LEIGH-ANNE PINNOCK

You proved you love Leigh-Anne Pinnock (from everyone’s fave girl band) as much as we do, with 1 million views of her Style Edit in just one week – it was that good.

MENSWEAR ACCESSORIES

Above-the-keyboard dressing became a thing with 2 million menswear accessories – that’s hats, chains, earrings and grooming styles – making their way into your Zoom calls.
ASOS Marketplace

ASOS MARKETPLACE

ASOS Marketplace enabled thousands of you to stay cozy in lockdown with loungewear from lots of fab independent labels and vintage boutiques. 156% more of you invested in sweatpants, 88% in sweatshirts and 83% in a full tracksuit look. And a special shout-out to tie-dye socks, which were worn by 2,281% more of you, too.

Keep your eyes peeled for more tie-dye in 2021, with hippie brights and acid washes set for success.
Model wearing skater jeans | The Best Trends Of The Year | ASOS 2020

SKATER JEANS

We sold 7 million pairs of menswear jeans and casual pants, but there was one clear favorite. Beating skinny jeans for the first time since the dawn of time (ish), 222% more skater styles made their way to you than last year.

Psst... We’re looking good (obviously) but we’re doing better, too. All our jeans in the Responsible edit use 50% less water in production and are made with responsibly sourced cotton.
Model wearing ASOS EDITION Bridal gown | The Best Trends Of The Year | ASOS 2020

BRIDAL

While 132,000 couples had to cancel or postpone their wedding this year (sending ❤️ if that’s you), we still managed to help lots of you with your big day. You snapped up an ASOS EDITION bridal dress every three minutes during lockdown, and 14,000 of you chose our ‘Sophia’ dress to be The One. Love’s not cancelled.

FACE COVERINGS

Now for the other face masks in our lives. The love 1.2 million of you showed for our re-usable face coverings raised £230,000 for Oxfam (we donated £1 per ASOS-face-covering sale). Plus, opting for re-usable face coverings reduces the number of disposable masks that end up in our oceans. Thank you!
Model wearing ASOS 4505 activewear set | The Best Trends Of The Year | ASOS 2020

ASOS 4505

Leggings became a way of life and 188,000 of you were loving our ASOS 4505 icon leggings in particular (that’s enough to cover 500 laps of the London Olympic park running track when laid end-to-end, in case you were wondering).

When summer came around, the ASOS 4505 love didn’t wane, but instead booty shorts were the object of affection, which saw 200% more sales compared to 2019.
Proud together | The Best Trends Of The Year | ASOS 2020

PRIDE

June is always one of our favorite months. Why? Pride, of course! You obviously loved it as much as us, because our #ProudTogether takeover on Instagram included our most-liked post of the year, with 272K Likes and 2.8 million views. We’re proud 🌈
Ay Sauce Tik Tok campaign still | The Best Trends Of The Year | ASOS 2020

TIKTOK

Ay Sauce anyone? It would be almost illegal to talk about 2020 without mentioning TikTok. After endless lockdown scrolling, we fancied a go of our own – and you watched it 2.8 billion times (and counting). NBD.
Models wearing ASOS DESIGN Circular Collection | The Best Trends Of The Year | ASOS 2020

CIRCULAR COLLECTION

This September, you might have peeped the ASOS DESIGN Circular Collection or even added some to your wardrobe. It was a collection all about reducing, re-using and recycling throughout the production process. We want to wave goodbye to waste, say hello to versatility and durability, and use recycled materials. Watch this space for new things in 2021.

Spoiler alert! In 2021, keep your eyes peeled for vegetable dyes, as well as more recycled and organic materials.
ASOS packaging | The Best Trends Of The Year | ASOS 2020

OUR PACKAGING

We’re now 100% your type off paper. Yep, our returns process went paperless, saving a whopping 320,000kg.

Not stopping there, our bags are also now recycled, recyclable AND, if you send them back to us, we’ll turn them into new bags – cool, eh?

CARBON EMISSIONS

Too much carbon is no good for the planet, so we’re on a mission to reduce ours. Since 2016, our emissions are down 30% per order – that’s 110,000 tonnes of CO2 a year.

300% more of you got motivated to get outside thanks to The North Face’s puffer jackets this year, keeping you warm but looking cool on every stroll in the park and grocery store shuffle. You’ve also been treating yourselves to their beanies and gloves, which both sold 100% more than last year. Toasty.

ASYOU

We saw Kim Kardashian-West wearing visible thongs, so we sold a dress with a visible thong. You couldn't get enough of ASOS-exclusive brand AsYou. Its low-rise hip-strap flares sold out in just a week, closely followed by that thong midi dress.
