INSPIRATION AND ADVICE

4 WAYS TO SHOP MORE SUSTAINABLY

Happy Earth Day! Today's all about increasing awareness of global environmental concerns – plus, the movement is celebrating its 50th birthday. With this in mind, we wanted to show you where we’re at on our journey to making ASOS a more sustainable place to bag your favourite looks.

We’ve started by making our returns process paperless, and by improving our plastic-packaging situation. Our bags are made from recycled materials and are recyclable, too – just stick them in with your next ASOS return, and we'll either reuse them or turn them into new bags. We're also using more eco-friendly manufacturing processes and materials in the clothes we sell. And there’s lots more on the way. If you wanted to start making small changes too, but aren’t sure where to start, below you’ll find four ways to shop – all with more sustainability in common. #WeAreOnIt

The Repsonsible edit

Loads of the clothes we create (along with lots of your other favourite brands on our site) use methods and materials that are better for the planet. And an easy way of finding them all is to head straight to our Responsible edit. It’s full of your fave bits – jeans, tees, shirts, swim stuff, accessories – pretty much your whole wardrobe.

The edit includes items made from recycled or sustainably sourced materials, and products created using more eco-friendly processes that waste less water. If you want to find out what makes your favourite styles in the edit so special, take a look at the fabric info in the product description for the full low-down.

ASOS Marketplace

Giving clothes a second chance is way better than styles ending up in landfill, and there’s no better place to find amazing, one-of-a-kind vintage pieces than ASOS Marketplace. Think Versace and Polo Ralph Lauren shirts, Reebok sweats and Tommy Hilfiger jeans (plus loads more big-name brands) – that are 20+ years old! That’s true vintage, people.

That’s not all, though – ASOS Marketplace is also home to loads of sustainably-minded boutiques, as well as brands that upcycle and rework old garms into totally new pieces. So, not only are you giving these styles another life and saving them from landfill, but you’re also supporting up-and-coming brands and small businesses – while scoring looks that no one else is gonna have. Ideal.

Upcycle your old trainers

Got some old kicks you don't wear anymore but you're not quite ready to donate them? Get creative and customise them yourself. Our ASOS Insider Jono has created this amazing video explaining how to give your old trainers a crafty update. That's one less pair heading for the tip AND you can tell all your friends you're a low-key trainer designer... kind of. Check out @asos_jono for more upcycling videos, from tie-dye to DIY denim.

Switch up everyday things

Yep, it’s true, some of the things you use every day can have a big impact on the environment. A small thing, like switching to reuseable cups and bottles instead of takeaway or plastic, can drastically reduce wastage – and we've got loads of cool designs you can buy once and use for ever.

Even things like the bag you use every day can help, whether it’s choosing one made of recycled materials, or picking up a couple of simple tote bags to help reduce the amount of plastic bags you need to use for your weekly shop.
