5 SS19 ARCHIVE SNEAKER UPDATES
By Steven Potter, May 5, 2019
We all love a trailblazing, never-seen-before sneaker drop. But it's good to learn from those who came before too — particularly if these are iconic, archive sneaker styles. Some of the most hype kicks ever made are mods on throwback models, updated with the latest tech (think super-comfy soles) and eye-popping designs. So, before you enhance your footwear game for summer, take a look at the five born-again styles below and remember — always respect your elders.
Nike MK2 Tekno
Think of these as dad shoes 2.0. Taking inspiration from Nike’s Monarch sneakers (Nike’s OG dad kicks) the Nike MK2 Tekno silhouette is a wild fusion of norm-friendly design and futuristic updates. Neon and bright shades are here to stay this summer and the above colorway channels the vibe without going too OTT. In terms of getting on the chunky sneaker hype (or expanding your collection), the MK2 Teknos are a must-cop for sure.
New Balance 878
We’re not done with your dad's favorite sneaks just yet. New Balance has long been a staple brand of the sensible shoe crowd and, with the look being somewhat timeless, the New Balance 878 model is at the top of the chain. Part of NB’s '90s revival pack, the 878s radiate big throwback energy — just check out the overblown outsole and oh-so-sensible colorway. With '90s inspiration coming out on top for yet another season at least, this stripped-back pair is the perfect way to do the decade minus the day-glo details.
Vans Staple Bold Ni
There aren’t many sneaker styles more suited to summer than a trusty pair of Vans. But if you’re looking for something different to your classic Old Skool and Authentic styles, take a peep at the new Staple Bold Ni range. The iconic brand scoured their archive for the inspiration behind this new iteration, giving it a 2019 spin with the addition of an ULTRACUSH sockliner... which basically means they’re comfy AF. With loads of great colors on offer, this nu-retro style is perfect for adding that bright update to your summer style.
Converse Chuck 70
If this is the season of bold choices within menswear, the current animal-print hype running across, well, everything, this year is probably one of the boldest we've seen in a while. Ideal then, that Converse have released the above zebra-print Chuck 70s alongside equally-in-your-face camo, leopard and star-print designs. An upgrade from just your classic Chucks, the 70s feature a thicker canvas upper with a nicely cushioned footbed. A zebra-print style that’s actually wearable? Catch us in these all summer long.
Reebok Daytona DMX 1200
Reebok’s DMX range has quickly become a favorite among chunky-sneaker aficionados. The DMX 1200 is a new model within the same family, which gets its sweet looks from '90s archive pieces. The wavy upper is designed to represent speed and movement, which is cool — but the real charm is that they sit between subtlety and overbranding perfectly with their small logo details. City trip coming up? Your sightseeing just got way more stylish.
