HOW WE DO: NIKE AIR MAX KICKS

March 1, 2019

With celebrations like St. Patrick's Day approaching, there’s one other, much steezier event that should be in your calendars too. March 26 is Air Max Day, an annual celebration of the Nike sole tech that revolutionized the sneaker game. To get you ready, we rounded up the sneaker aficionados at ASOS HQ to see how they style out their favorite air-cushioned kicks.

First up, we have Finn Evans, our Senior Brand Strategist, wearing Nike Air Max 270s. Inspired by early models from the '90s, these kicks actually feature the tallest Air Unit (the official term for those pumped-up heels) ever made, for maximum cushy feels.

This may seem like a straightforward 'fit at first, but it’s the little things that really count. Crisp white socks match the overblown two-tone sole, with the rest of the black outfit bringing out the multi-colored heel. This really is a case of less is more. Bravo!

Anyone else thinking of those pink and blue fizzy sweets? TBF, those 720 kicks look just as tasty. Tie-dye is back this year (groovy), so take a leaf outta Junior Stylist Coco's book and match a vibrant tee to the kicks.

For added '90s bonus points, peep those oval shades coordinating with some optic-white cargo pants, cropped to make the most of that tripped-out colorway underfoot. Delicious.

Baba, our Cultural Marketing Coordinator, represents in the Nike Air Max 720s. The newest iteration of the Air Max family, their Air Unit is made from 75% recycled manufacturing waste. Serving up futuristic looks in a sustainable way? We’re sold.

Tapping into the utility trend, Baba has kept things simple with a Stussy hoodie and white utility-style vest and topped things off with cargo pants. Remember: this season, the more pockets your outfit has, the better.

Is there a more spring-appropes look than this one? Social Media Manager Sarah is flexing a colorway that's fresh AF. Matching the punchy-in-pink heel on those 270s to the rest of her 'fit is a perfect example of bold-is-best transitional dressing.

A vibrant pink sweat is an easy way to tap into 2019’s neon vibe, and — as the '90s are still having a moment RN — she opts for a piece from throwback kings Champion. Adding some floral print into the mix keeps the look very much in the realms of springtime chic. Blooming lovely.

The '90s vibes continue with Edwin, our PPC Executive, and his steely-gray Air Max 95s. Released in (you guessed it) 1995, they were rather unfairly classed as the "ugly duckling" of the Air Max clan. Proving this judgement wrong, Edwin’s paired the kicks with a laid-back look.

Demonstrating how you can mix techy sneakers with a touch of grunge styling, Edwin has built his look with a classic gray hoodie and a vintage-style Harley Davidson tee. With washed and ripped jeans completing the look, it’s grunge meets athleisure. Could we go as far as saying "athgrunge"? Maybe...

The Air Max 97 quickly became a favorite of the sneaker line's legacy after its initial release. It was also the first Air Max style to feature full-length air cushioning — which our designer Emma seems to be enjoying in the out-of-season February sun.

Checking two trend boxes in one hero piece, Emma has opted for an oversized corduroy shirt with cut-and-sew panels to brighten up the whole look. With all the color up top, she’s kept it classic with skinny black jeans and poppin’ white socks twinning for the win with that chunky sole. It's a coordinated masterclass.
