INSPIRATION AND ADVICE
HOW WE DO: SKATER JEANS
By Lakeisha Goedluck, March 5, 2018
In the past year, skatewear has been the aesthetic to get on board with. From relaxed, graphic-print hoodies to retro Vans silhouettes, remixing your staple threads with ramp-ready cuts is where it’s at. To get you set for spring, refresh your denim selection with a pair of skater jeans — here’s how the fellas at ASOS HQ are styling theirs for the upcoming season.
If skatewear is right up your street, why not go for a full-on skate-inspired ensemble? Our stylist Ben nails all the necessary elements with this laid-back get-up. To begin, he opts for a relaxed, oversized black hoodie with a small graphic-print logo.
Down low, he goes for more detailing with a pair of distressed light-wash skater jeans with white side-paneling to counteract his top half. On foot, he rocks a classic pair of slip-on Vans to tie his monochrome ensemble together.
When it comes to authentic '90s skater gear, slouched silhouettes usually come to mind. Junior Looped editor Nic masters the old-school aesthetic here by dabbling in a little light layering with his ’fit. Starting with a plain white tee, he chooses a long-sleeved graphic-print top to pair it with.
On his bottom half, he goes for a pair of relaxed-fit mid-wash jeans to keep his loose-fitting look uniform. A pair of black and white Converse sneakers finish off a get-up that’s steeped in steez.
In case you weren’t aware, corduroy is presently one of the most popular fabrics going. While Harrington and bomber jackets made from the material have been seen on street-stylers everywhere, here, CRM artworker Tom rocks a pair of skater-style corduroy jeans instead.
He wears a simple off-white long-sleeved top to offset the color of his black cords. Notice how he’s rolled up the cuffs of his jeans to draw attention to his Converse Low kicks that feature the same hues as the rest of his outfit.
Unlike the rest of the ASOSers featured here, senior content editor Matt is wearing a more traditional ensemble. Retro knitwear has been ubiquitous for FW17/18, so carry the trend on well into spring with a casual look like this one.
Tonality is the trick to Matt’s get-up. He sports a cobalt patterned sweater with light-wash blue skater jeans for a heritage-inspired ’fit with a fresh spin. To finish, he dons a pair of brown hiking boots for a transitional triumph.
