Everybody wants some style
By Matt Glazebrook, May 12, 2016
From the denim dungarees and skimpy slogan tees of Dazed and Confused to Ethan Hawke's Interrailing take on classic leather jacket and crew neck cool in Before Sunset, Richard Linklater's movies often come with some strong sartorial take-homes. With the release of his new 1980-set college flick Everybody Wants Some!! we take a look at the director's latest set of style lessons.

Everybody wants some... two-tone tees
Ringers, raglan sleeves and contrast yokes – the world of Everybody Wants Some!! is a cornucopia of two-toned retro T-shirts. This slim-fit varsity-vibe classic is an easy, breezy way to inject a throwback flavour into your summer casual game – pair white with primary colour detailing for the traditional look, or mix and match muted mauves and burgundies for a cooler, contemporary version.

Everybody wants some... sawn-off punk sleeves
Want to know the easiest way to channel the punk influence currently blazing a trail through the streetwear scene? If the boys of the Southeast Texas Cherokees are to be believed, just take a pair of scissors to your favourite T-shirt's sleeves. Indeed, main man Jake's makeshift sleeveless khaki number would look as at home in a recent Yeezy collection as it does in a Texas punk club.

Everybody wants some... 70s stripes
Fashion's fascination with the more flamboyant end of 70s style has waned of late and a more subtle borrowing – channelling the muted shades and homely patterns worn by regular, non-disco dancing denizens of the decade – has emerged. Linklater's baseball buds have a strong line in understated striped tees, which are perfect for a SS16-appropriate interpretation of everyday 70s prints.

Everybody wants some... Western wear
EWS!! costume designer Kari Perkins cites Urban Cowboy as an influence, with the gang road-testing a honky-tonk vibe on their voyage of sartorial self-discovery. Ten-gallon hats are a niche look in 2016 (outside of Texas, anyway) but the pearly-snap-button Western shirt is a timeless option for adding a touch of vintage rodeo flair to any outfit.

Everybody wants some... bro style
Macho male bonding and intra-bro competitiveness are a key theme in Everybody Wants Some!!, and the battle for sporting and social supremacy inspires some of the film's strongest style statements. We'd swerve the short shorts and pulled-high tube socks if you're a beginner, but old-school American sports jerseys are an open goal when it comes to channelling the film’s nostalgic frat-chic spirit.
