SEPTEMBER'S BEST KICKS
By Steven Potter, 23 September 2020
Kicking things off with a future-facing entry from trainer titans Nike, as the brand has taken some of its beloved classics and given them a responsible spin. These Nike Air Max 90s are made using recycled materials – the tongue and laces are made entirely of materials that would otherwise have ended up in landfill. And, yes, you should definitely brag about that to your mates when you roll up in your new kicks.
Nike isn’t the only brand pushing for more sustainably sourced styles. adidas Originals have also taken some of their most iconic silhouettes and given them an eco-focused makeover. We’ve picked the SC Premiere trainers because, well, they look great with jeans, chinos, joggers and everything… really. Plus – you see those laces? They’re made of paper. And the soles are made of naturally sourced rubber and recycled materials. Adidas have even reduced pattern-cutting waste during the manufacturing process. Impressed much?
Up next, another absolute classic (quite literally) in the form of these Reebok Classic legacy trainers. Big on retro-runner vibes – their inspo comes from the 70s – these are the kicks to pair with your dad jeans. Oh, and that overblown sole will score you some big trend points, too. These babies have got it all.
Another one for fans of throwback styles: the New Balance 574 is the textbook definition of a ‘retro runner’. First created back in the 80s, it was NB’s colour palettes that took this model from pavement-pounding stalwarts to everyday, retro-inspired faves. In 2020, the 574’s running days are officially over, but the comfy tech remains, and the result is one of the most wearable kicks in the game.
Now, no one expected a brand that produces construction machinery and workwear garms to come out of the blocks with kicks so chunky, so overblown, so… 2020, that they are literally impossible to ignore. We’re talking Cat footwear. Part of the brand’s future-leaning Re-Power range, this Vapor model is a gloriously over-the-top offering – essentially perfect for any fan of larger-than-life sneakers. Throw in the stone-cold-tonal colourway to match all your utility-style garms and we might just have a new favourite sneakerbrand.
