JORDAN HAMES GIVES US THE LOWDOWN
By Steven Potter, 14 September 2020
It was probably the best thing I’ve ever done because it helped me get to where I am now. I’ve been given the opportunity to show the world what I’m interested in, and that’s all I ever wanted to do, really. I’ve just started a podcast on BBC Radio 1Xtra with Snoochie and Kaz Crossley, and done a BBC1 Match Of The Day X feature with Manchester United’s Brandon Williams, which was a dream come true for me – as is this ASOS shoot, honestly.
Do you still keep in touch with any of the other contestants?
I formed genuine bonds and real friendships on the island; I'm still close with Chris Taylor, Michael Griffiths and Danny Williams – we actually all live together!
What do you like the most about the ASOS DESIGN Must-Haves styles?
The pastel shades in the collection. There’s a full pastel-pink outfit – a top and cargo pants – that I styled with some white shoes that also had a bit of pink on, it tied the look up nicely. I like the fact that a lot of the collection is oversized too, that’s the kind of stuff I wear day-to-day.
Where do you find your style inspiration?
People like Travis Scott and Lil Uzi Vert – they both have that utility-led vibe, lots of neutral and pastel tones. Travel is a massive inspiration for me as well. I’m half Ghanaian and the culture is full of bright colours, so, when I was there recently, I suddenly thought: right, this must be why I always go for things that are a little bit outside the box! It felt like it was half of me that I hadn’t seen before.
American rappers specifically – I just think the way they dress is sick. I love the looks that come out of LA; I shop a lot at Melrose Avenue when I go there, and I also love visiting vintage shops to find pieces you can’t get anywhere else.
How do you keep your Insta so fresh?
When you’ve got a creative platform, it’s easy to just post what you know will do well, but I just want to put up the looks that I'm into, and not do it for anyone else. People didn’t really get it for a bit, but now I think they recognise my interest in fashion and that I like to do things. I’ve managed to gain a bit of a following for it, which is great.
What was the last outfit you bought?
It was actually from ASOS, you can find it on my Insta right now. It was a white oversized ASOS DESIGN shirt with a pink flower on it. I styled it with a white ASOS DESIGN vest and some purple Levi’s jeans that I also got on ASOS. I matched them with a pair of deadstock pink and white Nike Jordan 1s👟
How many pairs of trainers do you own, and do you have an all-time favourite pair?
I actually don’t know because I’ve recently moved to London, and I’ve got some pairs down here and more at my mum and dad’s. I must have over 50 or 60 pairs, I think. I’ve just bought my favourite pair actually, the Off-White x Nike Air Jordan 4s.
What are your top 3 grooming tools?
So, the top thing I use on my hair is Cantu shampoo and conditioner, it keeps my hair soft and curly, so I don’t go anywhere without that. In terms of skincare, I’m always using an exfoliator, toner and a moisturiser. And, of course, I’m not going anywhere without my afro comb.
Talking of going places, what&rsquo's your dream destination?
Tokyo. There are so many brands I follow on Instagram that come from Japan; they all take so much time over the designs and quality. It’s somewhere I want to go as soon as I can!
