AUGUST'S BEST NEW KICKS
By Steven Potter, 4 August 2020
First up: the undisputed champions of cali-cool, Vans. This latest drop – simply titled: ‘Sport Shoes’ – draws on the brand’s retro stylings, complete with an old-school ‘V’ on the sides and the instantly recognisable ‘Off The Wall’ graphic on the tongue. If you’re after a pair of kicks that will match literally everything you already own, unbox a pair of these now.
How do you make the already amazing retro silhouette of the Nike Blazer ’77 even cooler? You whack a big ‘ol pastel-coloured Swoosh on the side, that’s how. With the most subtle of nods towards one of summer 2020’s biggest trends, these kicks are perfect for completing a head-to-toe pastel look, or just dipping your toe(s) into new pastel-hued territory. And, in a summer dominated by throwback trends like tie-dye, the ‘77’s old-school aesthetic is hard to beat.
We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: New 👏 Balance 👏 is 👏 the 👏 king 👏 of 👏 dad 👏 trainers. And here, we have another shining example of why we are right: the New Balance 452. Just look at it – it’s chunky, it’s brightly coloured, and, even now, Dads everywhere are nodding silently in agreement at just how practical and comfortable they look. It’s everything you want for a normcore update. Like many of NB’s most cherished models, the 452 takes its look from 90s runners, updated with NB’s new Abzorb tech in that gloriously chunky sole.
If you’re after yet more chunky-sole action, let us introduce you to the newest member of the adidas Originals family: the Niteball. Following on from the success of the Falcon and Ozweego models, the Niteball is big on sole status, and takes styling cues from retro basketball kicks. Everything about the new design is high impact, from the super-thick 3-Stripe strapping to the overblown, comfy AF sole. If you’re after a futuristic statement-sneaker update, the Niteball is the one.
Arguably the leaders in super-wearable kicks – courtesy of models like the Classic Leather and the Club C – we’re psyched to see Reebok releasing more future-forward drops like the EVZN. Combining a retro colourway with a reworked lacing system and an exaggerated sole (plus, that all-important Vector branding to each side) the EVZN’s manage to sit perfectly with both retro and streetwear-inspired looks. Whether that’s dad jeans and an oversized sweat, or cargo trousers and a utility gilet, The EVZN's are real all-rounders.
