GROOMING TIPS

A BEGINNER'S GUIDE TO MAKEUP

So, you read the title and you’re still here. That means you’re curious – or maybe you wear makeup already. Whatever the case, with the iconic brand Urban Decay launching on ASOS, we thought we'd give you a step-by-step starter pack on how you can use some of their products. To help us out, we chatted to our marketing graduate Josh, who's an everyday makeup wearer and a huge Urban Decay fan. Check out his step-by-step guide below on how he lands a natural look in five easy steps.

Step 1: Prime your skin

A makeup primer is a great first step in any skincare/makeup routine. Not only does this help prep your skin for makeup, it also helps minimise the appearance of pores, fine lines and helps your makeup last longer. I’d recommend using the Urban Decay Optical Illusion Complex Primer, as it's enriched with antioxidants, rosehip oil and vitamin E extract, which is super-conditioning. Apply a few pumps to your finger and massage onto your face.

Step 2: Foundation

Foundation is your friend, and nothing to be scared of! We are all prone to blemishes, redness, spots and more, and a soft layer of foundation is a perfect way to blur imperfections, achieve a smoother complexion and more importantly, build that confidence! Urban Decay’s Stay Naked Foundation is a medium-coverage liquid foundation that's both blendable and lightweight – perfect for first-timers and experts alike. Use two-to-three pumps and apply to your face using your fingers – or, for a more airbrushed finish, use a beauty blender or foundation brush. This foundation boasts an amazing 50 shades, and leaves a matte finish – perfect for those with combination/oily skin.

Step 3: Conceal

This step is optional – however, for anyone like me, who gets dark circles and spots under the eyes, you may want to add a swipe of concealer here to brighten the face, or cover up any areas your foundation hasn’t managed to reach. Step up Urban Decay’s Stay Naked Concealer. Perfectly paired with UD’s Stay Naked Foundation, it comes in 24 shades. Top tip: to brighten the under-eye area, go one or two shades lighter – ideal for those late-night-early-morning situations…

Step 4: Eyebrows

Adding some colour to your brows can really help shape and define your face. I recommend using Urban Decay’s Brow Blade Double-Ended Ink Stain and Waterproof Pencil, a two-in-one brow tool and the gift that keeps on giving! On one end, you’ll find a waterproof pencil; use this side to create a natural shape that suits your facial structure. On the other end, you’ll find a felt-tip-like ‘ink stain’. This side is perfect for adding hair-like strokes across the eyebrow for a more natural and ‘fluffy’ finished look. Remember, eyebrows are sisters, not twins – so go wild!

Step 5: Set!

So, you’ve put in all the hard work – now’s time to make the finished product last. Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray is a weightless spray that’s suitable for all skin types. It features a long-lasting formula that tackles fading and melting and won’t settle into fine lines throughout the day. Just add a few refreshing sprays across the face. If you’re new to all of this and want to give it a test run, opt for the 30ml travel-size version. Oh, and if you’ve got combination/oily skin like I have, there’s also an Ultra Matte version for a no-shine finish that lasts all day.
