STYLISH CITY: LA
By Belle Rice, 10 August 2019
If you’re hopping off a plane at LAX, here’s the lowdown on what to do, wear and see in the City of Angels. Whether you’re a beach bum heading for the sun and surf, or a super fan of star-studded Hollywood, we’ve got the latest and greatest in Los Angeles right here.
Visiting Southern California in late summer means you’re bound to feel the heat. Angelenos are famed for their laid-back style, and a great way to tap into the vibe on sunny days is via a pair of utility shorts and a tie-dye tee combo. Finish the look with this season’s chunky trainers in boxfresh white. And whatever you do, don’t leave home without your sunglasses. Essential for shade (obvs), and they’ll add an extra layer of subtlety if you start getting starry-eyed in front of any celebs.
With five counties and dozens of districts and neighbourhoods, you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to accommodation. For a touch of old Hollywood glamour, the iconic Beverly Hilton hotel is a go-to, with its Aqua Star pool and palm trees sprouting high above its balconies. Oh, and it also plays host to the legendary Golden Globes each year – Angelina Jolie famously jumped into the aforementioned pool after winning her second award. Alternatively, you can’t go wrong with an Airbnb by the beach – try Santa Monica with its fairground pier and surfy aesthetic for early risers and devoted gym-goers.
For some serious fresh garms, make Beverly Hills your first stop. It's also got some must-see spots made famous by the movies, from the designer stores of Rodeo Drive (location of the legendary Beverly Hills Cop) to the Electric Fountain in Beverly Hills Triangle. Skater fans can ride their boards down from Santa Monica Pier to Venice Beach, where you can flip trick your way around the massive skatepark (worth a watch to see some seriously impressive skills even if you’re not a pro yourself). Rather be in the water than next to it? Up your surf game with some lessons at AquaSurf, available at various locations along the southern California coastline.
Fitness fanatics can get their kicks with a hike up to Griffith Observatory for unbeatable views of the entire city (Hollywood sign included). And when you’re up for a refresh after all the LA-style exercise, head to Nate 'n Al’s for an all-star American meal, or up the ante with drinks at The BLVD at the Beverly Wilshire.
