It's time to get reflective, chaps. And now, we don't mean pondering the meaning of life: we're talking builder-style hi-vis that you can see from miles away. The vibe was thought to be a retina-scolding flash in the pan way back in AW18 thanks to Calvin Klein, but with Charles Jeffrey Loverboy adding reflective taping for SS19 and Rick Owens going fully iridescent for SS20, the trend shows no sign of slowing down. With that in mind, we thought we'd select five of the best pieces for adding a flash (sorry) of inspiration to your summer look.
5 OF THE BEST REFLECTIVE STYLES
By Steven Potter, 20 July 2019
Talking of neon and reflective deets, our first pick has blended both, just in case the bold colourway wasn’t enough on its own. Team the tee with your favourite jeans or go full tech and grab some cargo trousers and chunky trainers with accompanying neon details. You’ll never lose your mates at a festival ever again. Who says sweet threads can’t be practical?
We’ve talked about going full hi-vis earlier and, if you're the sort of chap that doesn’t do trends by halves, these fully reflective joggers are the hero piece you’ve been waiting for. Oh, and if you’re thinking: 'that’s not reflective enough', firstly, fair play, and secondly, there’s a matching coach jacket available, too. Find some kicks and a bucket hat with reflective details and you’ve got yourself a look that you can pretty much see from space.
Another of this year’s mega trends is utility. And, if one item sums up the pocket-laden trend, it’s got to be the gilet. You won’t be creeping through any forests unnoticed in this number though, thanks to those highly reflective panels, but you will be nailing two trends with one highly wearable piece. Ideal.
If you're not quite ready for taking your look into full sci-fi territory, there are options that deliver a more subtle take on the vibe. Take the bum bag from NICCE above. Shiny enough to reflect the trend but small enough to wear with everything else you've already got. Oh, and if you ever misplace it, the bag should be pretty easy to spot among your other non-reflective gear. See? The benefits are endless.
For another super wearable, low-key piece, look to the hoodie above, complete with text print to the chest and sleeve. A pair of skinny jeans would be the go-to accompaniment, but a pair of techy nylon joggers (like the fully reflective pair from earlier) will kick this look into peak SS19 overdrive. Your choice.
