Going-out grooming tried and tested

Kindly putting his face and hair on the line is Analytics Graduate George. Keep scrolling for all the deets on each of the five products and the full lowdown from our man above.

Whether you’re a wet shave kinda guy or just like a little touch-up, a shave is one of the key starting points of any night out. So, first up we asked George to try L'Oréal Men Expert’s post-shave balm. The product features an ultra-hydrating formula designed to last 24 hours and helps to combat razor burn while soothing tight, dry skin. Lovely.

George’s verdict: 'It smells amazing without being too overpowering. It also has a silky-smooth texture and absorbs instantly – ideal for when you’re getting ready in a rush!'

Next up is House 99’s toning lotion. You can use this pre or post-shave but George tried it pre-shave due to the refreshing formula. It moisturises, tones and hydrates the skin. And, if you want to get techy about it, it's fortified with spirulina, quinoa and provitamin B5.

George’s verdict: 'I found this product more convenient to splash on in the morning instead of a moisturiser. It’s lightly scented and could definitely replace an aftershave if needed.'

When it comes to your 'do, styling products are everything. George gave Hanz De Fuko’s Claymation a go, which is designed to offer a super-high hold, perfect for gravity-defying styles like quiffs or pompadour cuts. It’s also made from all-natural ingredients so it nourishes your locks while keeping them in check. It's a win-win.

George’s verdict: 'There’s very little scent in this product which is great as it won’t interfere with any aftershave you’ve got going on. A little goes a long way, so use sparingly. The clay was super easy to spread over my hands and through my hair, and it kept my style in peak condition for the whole night. It gave my hair a nice matte finish, too.'

Yeah, we know self-tanning isn’t for everyone, but don’t knock it until you’ve tried it. Banish any notions of Day-Glo-orange nightmares with Bondi Sands Gradual Tanning Milk. The trick is in the name, chaps – it slowly builds up to a healthy glow over time, while moisturising the skin with nourishing aloe vera. A subtle tan and smooth skin – what's not to like?

George’s verdict: 'This just felt like a regular moisturiser and it left my skin feeling great. I have to admit, I was worried about being left streaky-faced, or the shade over-developing, but I didn’t have any issues at all. It left me with a subtle glow minus any of the obvious signs of self-tanning.'

Last thing then lads: your lips. You might scoff at the thought of investing in a lip balm but humid temps in the summer (or chilly winters) can play havoc with your smackers, leaving them feeling dry and cracked. As if it was made for a pre-night out ritual, the above Hydro-Salve Lip Balm by Baxter of California is mojito scented, and it's backed up by a vitamin-rich formula.

George’s verdict: 'This lip balm features a really easy-to-use applicator and it’s lightly fragranced which means it didn’t leave a weird after-taste. My lips felt hydrated without that greasy finish you sometimes get with other lip products.'
