HOW TO WEAR TIE-DYE FOR SS19
By Steven Potter, 11 April 2019
With MSGM and Louis Vuitton both showcasing tie-dye in their SS19 collections, the throwback favourite is big news for this season. Adopted by various counter cultures, starting with hippies in the 70s right through to raveheads in the 90s, it's a nostalgic moment that still somehow feels so right for now. Check out our three ways to channel the look below (minus the flower crowns, flares or an obsession with EDM).
Well, looks like we are actually going a little ‘glowsticks and whistles’ with this look. But that’s a good thing. The unstoppable 90s trend is dominating another season (at least), and that sporty half-zip hoodie wouldn’t look out of place in any secret warehouse rave. Add some straight-cut jeans in a light-wash finish complete with adidas Continentals, and the throwback vibes are peaking nicely. File this under ‘big festival weekend’ for future ref.
With tie-dye’s rebellious history, the design sits best with looks that push the boundaries – and the outfit above is pushing them to the limit. Teaming with a checked blazer is a big enough move, but completing the look with trackies and chunky trainers? The anti-establishment vibes are heavy, man. Think of this as your early morning rave finish, jog to work, straight into a meeting kinda thing. It’s psychedelic, smart athleisure – and we're here for it.
With washed-out tones and earthy shades sitting alongside neon and brights as the main SS19 colour stories, why not channel an earthier vibe with your tie-dye look? After all, not all styles need to feature every colour ever created. These trousers with their worker-style pockets keep things tonal and also add a touch of utility styling to the look. Check out the floral logo on those Converse Golf Le Fleur kicks, offering up a subtle nod to tie-dye’s flower-power roots. Keep it wavy.
