POST-WORKOUT SKINCARE: TESTED
By Steven Potter, 9 March 2019
Now, you may be blessed with better genes than me, but when I exercise I tend to get a bit blotchy due to my sensitive skin. Step up the Matt Skin Refresh Gel by men-ü. With a cooling, gel-like texture, it contains willow bark extract that has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. It’s also particularly good after shaving, as it targets ingrown hairs. I applied after a post-run shower and it instantly moisturised my skin. For the best results (and if you have more time), leave to air-dry for about a minute.
If you’re hitting the gym on your lunch break, firstly, fair play to you – I wish I had that level of dedication. Secondly, your choice of body wash could make the transition from treadmill to desk that little bit more enjoyable. Baxter Of California's Invigorating Body Wash comes with a refreshing citrus kick, thanks to a combination of Italian lime and pomegranate. Formulated with aloe vera and vitamin C, and free of sulphates and parabens, it left my skin feeling soft, smooth and nicely moisturised. Ideal if those two-or-more showers a day leave your skin feeling a little dry.
You can always rely on Clinique for some multi-benefit skincare and this hydrating cream is no exception. Designed as an anti-fatigue, hydrating concentrate (goodbye, hangover face) it features SPF40 protection and acts as a shield against pollution, pollen and even dust. So, if your gym of choice is in the city centre, it's got you covered. I applied every morning, giving my skin some extra protection from London's not-quite-so-fresh climate.
It’s all in the name with Mr Natty’s Gym Recovery Kit. The set includes a handy wash bag, a paraben-free shower wash (complete with a woody scent), a microfibre sports towel and an Urban Protection moisturiser that shields from pollution and UV rays. As an all-in-one purchase, it’s convenience personified. Plus, the body wash/moisturiser combo left me feeling more pampered than usual after a gym session. Self-care Sunday, but everyday.
Talking of self-care, there’s nothing more indulgent than a face mask. Chaps, if you haven’t tried one, I can officially say you’re missing out. From Korean skincare specialists Dr.Jart+, the five-pack of masks above is designed for deep hydration. And hydrate it did. The mask's celluose fibre the mask feels very slimy – but in a good way. It's slimy with hydrating goodness that seeps deep down into your pores, refreshing your complexion. An added bonus? I could sit and do absolutely nothing for 20 minutes. The perfect treat to myself after a five-a-side game in February, my skin felt softer and refreshed while I felt zen AF on the inside. I'm converted.
Tired of chapped lips? Yeah, me too. Luckily, I got to test Baxter Of California’s Hydro Salve Lip Balm. It’s got a clear, gel-like consistency and you don’t need very much, unless you want a glossy look. The balm is quick-absorbing and *spoiler alert* has a mojito scent. I mean, it’s always five o'clock somewhere, right? Apart from the lush smell, it’s loaded with a vitamin-rich formula to keep those smackers looking tip-top. Ideal for chilly morning runs or cold Saturdays playing soccer, rugby, or whatever sport you're into.
