STYLE LESSONS FROM WELL-DRESSED WOMEN
By Steven Potter, 8 March 2019
As it's International Women’s Day, and more than a few trends lend themselves to both men's and women's wardrobes this season, we thought we’d take a look at some of the very best looks our street-style sisters are flexing and what they can teach us about styling in SS19. Time to take notes, chaps.
With tonal suiting hitting Craig Green, MSGM and Off-White's AW19 runways, formal gear is transitioning into a real playground of palettes. Now, you can’t deny the power of your navy and grey options, but for SS19 it pays to be a little more experimental. Take the two 'fits above for example. Our girl on the left has given her bold blue suit a cold-weather spin by opting for a chunky, colourful roll-neck underneath. Our boy on the right has freshened up his emerald two-piece with some bright white accessories like those chunky Dr. Martens and 90s-style shades. Nice.
With ACNE Studios and Kenzo tapping into the neon movement with a more understated approach, we're taking a lesson from the lass above on how to flex on the trend without going full rave enthusiast. The combo of optic-white garms with an emergency-orange top means the outfit still pops but in a more considered manner. For a menswear spin on the look, opt for some subtle strapping like the high-vis inserts on the jacket above. You can strip back the rest of the look, safe in the knowledge your trend prowess is still very much on show.
Cargo trousers were the must-have trousers of choice for girls in the late 90s and early 00s (think All Saints or Avril Lavigne). For 2019, with the utility trend making sartorial waves, give your jeans the day off and choose the pocket-laden life instead. Channel this Parisian street styler’s off-duty vibe and go for trousers cut in a relaxed shape. You could rinse her colour scheme, too, and tap into the neutral shades trend, much like the chap on the right has done.
With Neil Barrett and Dior unveiling looks Kat Slater would be proud of for AW19, now is the time to unleash your external animal. The key to this trend is to make a statement, and what better way to do that than with pink python-print trousers like the lass above? We're 100% here for her look. Take this more-is-more approach to the trend and opt for safari-esque garms that really pop. This guy got the memo and went for a cropped leopard-print fleece. The combination of stripped-back trews and matching beanie ensures he’s making the most of this wildin' movement.
Tap into tonal
Hues glorious hues. Tonality is big news for SS19 and the lesson is less matchy-matchy, more shades in the same spectrum. For example, our girl on the left reps two shades of blue, and with the addition of workwear-style pockets and chunky trainers, you better believe we’re stealing this look. Too late – it looks like this Parisian lad has beaten us to it with a similar vibe, using four shades of blue.
Mac it up
As we head into true transitional-wardrobe territory, the need for a layering piece that can handle the wildly changing conditions grows greater. A cornerstone of spring/autumn 'fits since, well, forever, the humble mac is your one-way ticket to easy seasonal steez. The woman above has gone for a more smart-casual approach with some straight-cut trews and sensible shoes, wrapping it up with understated accessories. Proving the mac slots into any style, our man on the right has opted for a more streetwear-inspired vibe with chunky trainers and a printed tee. The lesson? It goes with everything, so take your pick.
