You know when you get to a certain age and start to realise that your mum actually was always right? Well, here’s one more thing to add to that list: practical clothes, which are now are officially cool. Yup, the SS19 catwalks, from Virgil Abloh’s Louis Vuitton to Heron Preston, were decked out in functional, utilitarian clothing. Think harness bags, hardwearing fabrics and multiple oversized pockets. Here’s how to wear the trend in three easy-steezy ways…
HOW TO WEAR UTILITY FOR SS19
By Titi Finlay, 3 March 2019
If the most recent fashion weeks (AW19) are anything to go by, neon and reflective accents are sticking around for good. Take some inspiration from YSL’s lit-up PFW show and put some fluoro into your 'fit with the Nike Zoom Fly trainers. Using their colour palette as a base, work in a black harness bag with a neon zip and a matching neon tee. A boxy, black coach jacket and grey technical tracksuit bottoms will help those bright accents to really pop.
Artful layering is the key to the seasonal grey area we currently find ourselves in, so for a practical getup that still looks spring-ready, try styling an oversized pale-blue shirt over a black long-sleeved tee. To keep the 'fit looking fresh, pair with lightweight technical trousers in a neutral colour and heavy-duty sneakers. A double-sided harness bag will finish the look off with a streetwear edge.
Looking for a laid-back downtime look? Meet the utility gilet – for days when you really don’t want to lug around a bag. This faded denim one has more pockets than you could ever need, and gives instant swag to an oversized T-shirt or hoodie. Here, we’ve layered it over a light pullover in technical fabric (cos, rain) with some retro velvet trackie bottoms and sneakers to keep the vibe weekend-appropriate.
