Just when you thought it was safe to pack away your thermals, in comes another Arctic breeze forcing you to reach for the extra insulation you’d already dismissed from service. But it’s cool because the street-style set in LondonMilanParis and New York have been out showcasing how winter dressing is done. From fleeced-up steez to on-point checks, here’s how to layer up and stay warm in style.

You’d be forgiven for thinking that a souped-up coach jacket, like this cult piece from Prada, brings enough heat on its own to offset cooler climes, but this guy knows there’s room for a little more here. Just in case his smart-yet-cosy padded outer shell doesn't quite cut it against the elements, he packs in not one but two more solid layers: a simple cream hoodie and toasty half-zip fleece for a sensible dose of dadcore. He adds a navy beanie and some contrasting colour elsewhere to flambé this winter warmer.

When it comes to cold-weather staples, we can’t overstate the benefits of investing in a longer coat. If you haven’t already enjoyed those extra inches of protection from icy winds then it’s time to take your lead from these seasoned pros. Whether you err towards our man on the left’s coordinated camel approach with its matching mac and bucket hat, thick hoodie and excellent ankle coverage, or our guy on the right’s considered consort of black cuts with its strong jacket-on-jacket action, one thing’s for sure – you’ll wonder why you ever left your backside out in the cold.

You’re not always going to be out in subzero conditions doing your best Bear Grylls bit – so when temperatures do climb into single figures, things can get a little less bulky. Cue this Parisian and his fresh take on preppy layering. Wearing a roll-neck under anything is an easy sartorial win when it comes to keeping warm – it adds an underlying edge to your outfit and bolsters whatever wardrobe staple you decide to layer on top. This fella goes for a classic rugby shirt for a collegiate vibe, a navy trench coat and a cross-body bag to keep things modern. Très bien.

It’s hard to tell where one part of this dark knight’s look finishes and another part starts, but that’s the beauty of this kind of masterful clothes-horsing. His assortment of monochrome pieces creates a strong, sophisticated silhouette and it’s safe to say he’s sorted warmth-wise. Though it might just have to remain one of life’s great mysteries, we estimate he’s got on at least four, maybe five, layers of clothing. Who knows, but he finesses the whole lot with a steezy white cap, coordinated bag and football scarf.

Finally, here we have a lesson in bold, confident layering from this season’s most valuable plaid player. This MVPP’s tactics don’t involve subtle, strategic sartorial moves – his game is about fast, high-impact play. First, he goes for a white igloo-like hoodie that creates a cocoon big enough to shield him from the chill. Next, he turns things up a notch with an oversized check jacket that’s basically like wearing a blanket. Finally, he balances things out on the bottom with baggy blue jeans. Well played, sir.
