STYLE LESSONS FOR NYE FROM FILMS

By Lakeisha Goedluck, 31 December 2018

The World Cup, Brexit negotiations, the royal wedding… 2018 has been one wild ride, but, alas, tonight the year must come to an end. As you gear up to greet 2019, we’ve put together a list of films that celebrate the arrival of another 12 months – y’know, just in case you have nothing to wear or watch tonight if you’re staying in.

About A Boy

Before Nicholas Hoult landed the role of troublemaker Tony Stonem in hit British drama series Skins, he starred opposite Hugh Grant at the age of 13 in About A Boy. Hoult appears as Marcus – a young kid that’s having problems at school. He ends up meeting Will (Grant), who’s a bachelor that starts attending single-parent meetings at Marcus’ school in an attempt to bag himself an available woman. The two form an unlikely friendship and Will manages to land a healthy, loving relationship with Rachel (Rachel Weisz). The couple first cross paths at a New Year’s Eve party where Will looks extra dapper in a dark coloured shirt-and-suit combo. Channel his style but switch out your shirt for a tee this year.

Poseidon

Alright, so if you were doing a crossword and the clue was, ‘movie about an ocean liner that sinks’, Titanic would probably come to mind before Poseidon – but it’s well worth the watch, trust. The original version of the film came out in 1972 (a whole quarter of a century before Leo, AKA Jack, let go of that damn door), but the flick was remade in 2006. Starring Josh Lucas, Kurt Russell and Jacinda Barrett, the disaster flick begins with the Poseidon’s passengers enjoying a New Year’s Eve party, when a sudden freak wave causes it to capsize. For NYE, opt for a crisp white shirt à la most of the male guests – but try not to let yours get wrecked.

Bridget Jones' Diary

A party not your vibe? Don’t worry, Bridget Jones has all the ‘chilling at home’ inspiration that you need. In one of her most iconic roles to date, Renée Zellweger plays Bridget – the hapless singleton who’s stuck between two love interests, Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) and Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant). The first instalment, Bridget Jones’ Diary, sees the protagonist sat at home on New Year's Eve setting out her resolutions for the coming year. Dressed in a plain white robe, wear yours while you’re relaxing at home tonight or venture out in it if you’re feeling adventurous. It is NYE, so anything goes, right?

When Harry Met Sally

Now, most people know When Harry Met Sally for that, ahem, iconic scene. In the classic romcom, Meg Ryan stars as Sally Albright opposite Billy Crystal who plays Harry Burns. The story sees the two college graduates embark on a road trip from Chicago to New York, only to find themselves embroiled in an argument over whether men and women can really just be friends. Time passes and the two get together – only for Harry to go and ruin it. In an iconic New Year’s Eve scene which sees Sally brimming with tears, Harry begs for her back in the coolest brown leather jacket that’s probably ever appeared on screen. Copy his character’s aesthetic and pop on a roll-neck, slacks and minimal shoes to say farewell to 2018.

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THIS STORY?
