INSPIRATION AND ADVICE

BEST STREET STYLE OF 2018

By Matt Glazebrook, 27 December 2018

It’s fair to say that 2018 has been a bit of a weird one. You know you’re living in interesting times when a reality TV star drops easily the best rap album of the year and the England team breezes through to a World Cup semi-final playing relaxed, enjoyable football. But through all this turbulence, one thing has remained stable and consistent: whenever fashion week has rolled around, dapper dudes have turned up to flex in their freshest ‘fits and we’ve been there to steal outfit ideas off them. Here’s a selection of our favourite looks this year.

This January look was a low-key one – your man here didn’t even have to look up from curating his Spotify playlist to deliver it – but it started the year off right. Side-stripe trousers were a welcome hangover from 2017’s most-hyped list, while combining the rich burgundy and pink of the under-layers with the more neutral blacks and grey of his leather jacket, bag and kicks showed off a fresh, subtle take on tonal for the new year.

Going full retro isn’t the done thing among the stylish set these days (better to mix your vintage pieces with more contemporary add-ons for an all-eras amalgam, it seems) but this timeless dresser doesn’t care about your old-school rules – just look at the smile on his face. And why wouldn’t he be happy? He’s rocking the absolute heck out of a 50s-style wide-collared polo shirt, classic black shades, espadrilles and a crisp blue shirt. It’s a breezy, relaxed take on sartorial nostalgia that’s delivering strong ‘Rat Pack on spring vacation’ vibes.

This one's all about the details. The patterning on the chunky-soled shoe, the subtle bootcut on the cropped trouser, the fashion tuck of the graphic tee, the cheeky cross-body bag, the way the purple of his sunglasses lenses complement the purple of his top – it’s little things that elevate ‘just nipping to the shops’ to ‘just nipping to the shops, but fashion’.

While dadcore continued to dominate the menswear scene in 2018, the next-level trend-setters were copping a different generation of garms. Shuffle forward grandadcore, the freshest twist on knowingly normie fashion. This old-before-his-time OG mashes up senior-citizen staples like a tweed jacket, loose-fitting slacks and a smart leather bag with some crisp white creps and a punchy printed tee. It’s what your grandpa would wear to go skateboarding, basically.

Talking of inter-generational fashion crossovers… This fella sticks to the tried-and-tested dad steez formula but tweaks it slightly for summer and, in doing so, hits the exact sweetspot between dadcore basics and streetwear hype. Ugly-cool Balenciaga Triple S trainers? Check. Simple, comfy wide-leg workpants and boxy tee? Check. Highly coppable Off-White pouch? You got it. The sort of floppy sunhat Australian cricketers would wear in the 80s? Sure, why not.

If you asked us to name the key trends from 2018 there’s a good chance we’d include emergency orange, printed statement pieces, cargo trousers and big chunky 90s trainers on our list. If you asked this guy the same question, he’d probably just point down at his outfit and be done with the whole exchange a lot quicker.
