Early winter, eh? It’s freezing in the morning but you're sweating by lunchtime – what’s a guy to do? Look to the gilet, that's what – a transitional hero that, as its alternative name suggests, will keep your body warmer (and your arms cooler) in the most changeable of cold weather conditions. Here's how the street-style stars are styling up sleevelessness this season.
INSPIRATION AND ADVICE
5 STYLISH GUYS IN GILETS
By Steven Potter, 5 December 2018
For those slightly colder days, take a leaf out of this Parisian's livre and double up your padded gilet over a check overcoat for a layered look that's très toasty. With clashing prints and patterns up top, he’s gone all-black-everything underneath to up the wearability factor. The 90s inspiration comes thick and fast with matching round sunglasses and another unexpected hero piece, the pocket chain, a nod to the skater and grunge scenes of the era.
We've talked retro sportswear before and the throwback athletic look doesn't seem to be going anywhere fast. Champion has seen a massive resurgence in recent years with vintage heads and hypebeasts alike repping a bit of all-American sporting heritage. Opting for the plain black piece, this guy's making the most of that instantly recognisable logo. The plain grey hoodie helps keep the wind out and matching hues in the beanie, jeans and Converse One Stars bring it all together. Continuing the theme of American branding, we spy an Eastpak bum bag worn cross-body for curb-surfing on that skateboard of his.
Smart-casual isn’t the first thing that springs to mind when choosing a gilet but don’t let that stop you. Just take inspiration from this fella and his casual-up-top, business-at-the-bottom look. Tonal is the name of the game here as he's matched his socks to his gilet and beanie to his specs in a tour de force of colour use. The tapered chinos keep things comfy while the striped shirt and freshly polished Derby shoes means he's ready to go from the streets to the boardroom in just a couple of layers. Promotion worthy? We think so.
Staying on that smart-casual hype, what about a suit and a gilet? Some might say it can't be done but this chap snapped in New York has dispensed with any doubts like a true sartorial trailblazer. Combining two different styles of workwear, he's chosen a twill, Carhartt WIP gilet but layered it over a double-breasted suit and navy jumper, making the most of those matching highlights. A dark-brown, wide-brim hat continues the smarter theme while the tonal high-top trainers keep things comfy and street-ready underfoot. For the finishing touches, a pendant necklace and rings make it occasion-worthy. Consider this our new winter wedding jam.
Such a lightweight
There is the odd flash of warmer-than-usual weather during the winter months and, as a layering piece, this is where the gilet comes into its own.Take some in-between inspiration from this Milanese guy's clean white vest with utility-pocket styling. The simple logo tee and cropped black trousers keep things low-key and the day-glo trainers and matching hat are a sweet use of rave-ready neon highlights. The 90s aesthetic doesn't stop there with white oval sunnies – as rocked by the godfather of grunge Kurt Cobain – tying the whole thing together.
