STYLE LESSONS FROM CHRISTMAS FILMS

Macaulaly Culkin first captured hearts and imaginations as Kevin McCallister in Home Alone (1990). Accidentally left behind by his family as they head to France for the holidays, the forgotten youngster makes the most of his newfound freedom – but finds himself having to fend off hapless robbers, Harry and Marv. After successfully scaring them away, a chance encounter in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992) finds Kevin once again on his own and attempting to escape the thieves. Take style tips from the crafty kid and don a knitted jumper, chinos and duffle coat this season. Oh, and don’t forget a patterned bobble hat, ya filthy animal.

Originally published in 1843, Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol is a tale of morality that has lasted the ages. It’s been adapted for theatre and screen a number of times over the years but no version is as animated as The Muppets Christmas Carol (1992). The movie sees Kermit, Miss Piggy and co try to encourage Scrooge (Michael Caine) to get into the Christmas spirit. While relaxing at home over the festive period, say ‘Bah humbug!’ to your everyday wardrobe and stay kitted out in pyjamas and a cosy robe, à la the old man, instead.

Everyone’s got mad love for Bill Murray. From his role as sarcastic weatherman Phil Connors in Groundhog Day to his turn as an oceanographer out for revenge in Wes Anderson’s The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Murray is one of the most cherished actors of his generation. In Scrooged (1988), another adaptation of Dickens’ esteemed novella, Murray plays Frank Cross – a TV executive whose pursuit of success costs him his girlfriend. On his road to redemption, Murray’s character can be seen rocking some pretty slick suits – remember to accessorise with a red tie for a festive finish.

Between Bill Nighy as a chart-topping pop star and Hugh Grant playing the prime minister, Love Actually might just be the best British Christmas film of all time. A real tear-jerker, this multiple-storyline romcom is full of stellar outfit inspiration. Copy Liam Neeson’s character and get yourself a longline black overcoat and a minimal scarf to stay cosy this winter.

Directed by Todd Haynes, Hollywood heavyweights Rooney Mara and Cate Blanchett appear opposite each other as friends who fast become lovers in Carol (2015). The two cross paths at a department store in Manhattan where Mara’s character Therese works, as Carol (Blanchett) searches for a Christmas present for her daughter. A delicate and tumultuous depiction of love, the film offers a great lesson in seasonal layering with ornate fur coats, scarves and berets sported by the pair throughout.
